15 Ways to Find Your First Customer

magnify glass customers

Making the decision to work at home as a mom entrepreneur is an exciting step. The process of envisioning and planning for your business delivers an adrenaline rush like no other. Once you have settled on the kind of business you want to start {insert link} and have created a web presence to represent your operation, the adrenaline might turn to nerves as you start to ponder the very real hurdle of finding your first customers. Below are 15 reliable ways to hook prospective customers and reel in your first paycheck. Not every method will work for the particular product or service you plan to offer, but together these ideas present a big picture look at the options out there.

1. Hold a product launch event. This is relevant, of course, if your business has a product to introduce to a market. If you?re selling something that is readily available elsewhere, it probably doesn?t need its own event. Launch events usually cater to one of three audiences: tradespeople, media, or prospects. Choose an audience for your event (don?t try to cover them all, or the event will be ineffective) and choose the location and invitation list accordingly.

Don?t make the mistake of hearing the word ?event? and thinking this must be a scheduled affair or a face-to-face gathering. Modern-day events can be mobile, making use of street teams or even flash mobs, or be arranged online. Social media is great for planning a cyber event to launch your product.

Find more tips on planning a product launch event here.

2. Take advantage of friends and family. That?s not a directive to bully your relatives into buying your product. Just consider that they are a receptive audience who is inclined to help you out. If your product or service helps solve a problem for someone you?re close to, why would they not choose to buy from you?

With family, it is tempting to give your products or services away for free. Do not take that too far. Your friends and family can serve as a test market, but they are not as objective and probably won?t be as critical as the rest of your market is likely to be. Their testimonials are less valuable for the same reason. If your inner circle is in the market for something you offer, give them your pitch, but don?t just give them your product.

3. Find customers in your civic circle. Many people belong to civic organizations because they enjoy the camaraderie and the cause, but they are also aware of the networking advantages that membership brings ? don?t be afraid to pursue customers in any organization to which you belong.

4. Scan your school days for connections. Consider former classmates and teachers, college buddies, extra-curricular club members, and teammates. You own a business, which means you are in sales. You can?t be afraid to tap people you know, and why should you be when you are offering a product or service you are proud to stand behind?

5. Consider how what you offer might add value for the professionals and tradespeople you interact with on a daily, weekly, monthly, or even yearly basis. That includes your doctor, dentist, accountant, hairstylist, baby-sitter ? anyone who performs a service for you. They might be inclined to support your endeavor if you can present it as something that makes their life or work easier or better.

6. Give it away. But not to family members (see #2)! If your business takes off, you will be in a position somewhere down the line to offer freebies to friends. But for now, any giveaway you offer should go to someone who is part of or represents the market you are trying to enter. If you decide to hold a product launch event (#1), consider offering an event discount for the product to anyone who attends.

7. Use your local Chamber of Commerce. Any local chamber worth its salt will offer a variety of networking and get-to-know-you events for its members or prospective members, and budding businesses are one of their main draws. Contact the Chamber to find out how you can participate with or without a membership ? you may find that a membership will pay dividends when it comes to finding a local market.

8. Attend a state or national conference or meeting. Register for a booth to show off your product or simply use the time to network with people in-the-know in the industry you?re joining. Either way, you will get some exposure for your business or product and can identify how you?re different from the competition, members of which are also likely to attend. That will help you snag customers in the long run if you can set yourself apart.

9. Capitalize on someone else?s event to market your product. This can be a one-time event, like a food, art, or music festival, or an ongoing event, like a Farmers? Market. If you can swing a booth at a repeat event, that?s a great way to not only find your first customer but to start to establish some regular customers who will look for you and come back for repeat business.

10. Use Facebook ? everyone else is (or so it seems)! As some businesses turn to Facebook for their entire online presence, customers are getting used to going to Facebook to learn about products and services. This is a quick way to attract attention, and your friends and family can help spread the word.

11. Create You Tube content. Whether you have enough material for your own channel or just want to create an advert to generate some buzz, You Tube is still a popular place to talk about your business. To see what kinds of adverts are working in that forum, view Mashable?s list of the top viewed You Tube ads of 2011.

12. Use Online coupons. They offer big discounts to buyers have big fans and big naysayers. They offer great exposure if you can identify what local markets you?d like to target, and they can be created for online businesses. Consider the option carefully and make sure you can absorb the cost if the coupon happens to be very successful. Read more about how to make daily deals pay off for your business.

13. Get inexpensive business cards printed at a site like Vista Print. Even if the card is generic to your business, as long as it states your web address, it enables you to leave that most-important piece of follow-up information with prospects at any event described above. If they are interested in what you offer, they can check it out on their own.

14. Find out how your competition is getting customers. Identify 2-3 businesses you?d like to emulate or that have a similar product. Browse the web and check out their promotional and marketing efforts. If they?ve been in business awhile, chances are what they are doing now is paying off for them or they wouldn?t be doing it

15. Plan a media splash. You can focus only on social media, but if you have the financial resources, a splash that involves other advertising venues can generate serious interest. This might mean spending a significant amount of your time, energy, and money in a concentrated time period (say 2 weeks) to get the word out about your business in as many forums as possible. You can accommodate for this if you plan for it in advance. Get specific about where you fit in the marketplace and consistently communicate your product through a variety of public relations vehicles (press releases, social media, and print advertising, for example). If people bite, you?ll want to incorporate more of the same over a longer period of time, but for now ? you need a more intensive launch!

Whatever you decide to do, make sure that you can measure the results. It is ok to take a risk and commit some resources to your initial effort if you are sure it won?t be fatal to the company if it fails. Finding new customers is about making money, yes, but it is also about testing the waters. If you only do a little bit here and a little bit there, you probably won?t be able to measure your results and identify what worked and what didn?t. Pick a few options, go forth, and get those customers!

The Real Housewives of New York City: Dirty Ol' Dad

The Real Housewives of New York City travel down to Miami to meet up with "Dirty Ol' Dad." The ladies brought their swimsuits, their heels and plenty of crazy as we recap it all in our THG +/- review.

Miami is beautiful. The sun, the sand, the surf.  Why do the Housewives have to bring along their craziness?

But let's start off with Carole. Since someone is offering to make her new novel into a TV show, finishing it is kind of important. The problem is she's been working on it for four years and she's can't stand to write about her protagonist for one minute more. Minus 10. If Carole doesn't like her main character, why will any else?

Off to Miami we go where the ladies check in with Carole's friend Ranjana at her palace in the sky. Plus 11 because the place is amazing. The view is spectacular and even Aviva with her fear of heights manages to hang out on the balcony.

Ranjana shows the ladies how to do face yoga which she obviously takes quite seriously. It might sound silly but it definitely works for Ranjana. At 56 the woman has beautiful skin. Plus 8.

That Ramona and Sonja manage to act like disruptive brats is no surprise. It seems to be the way they act at all parties.

Aviva's Fish Face

Aviva quickly learns that Ramona is the equivalent of the Energizer bunny on drugs. Minus 12 because somehow on this trip she's is even wackier than normal.

First she is obsessed with Aviva's prosthetic leg being in the pool to the point that she makes a scene and orders Aviva out of the water.  Minus 15.  Ramona's treating Aviva like she's a child? Aviva lost her leg decades ago. She certainly knows how to handle her prosthetic and even if she ruins it, it's not as though she doesn't have the money to replace it.

It really bothers Aviva but the girl needs to stand up for herself. She runs around complaining to Carole and Sonja instead of telling Ramona to cut the crap.  Minus 10.

It's hard to decide whose behavior is worse, Ramona or George's.

What can we say about George? He is sex obsessed. He has no filter. He has no manners. He may be perfect for Sonja.

Really, there's nothing cute or sexy about George. He is a well tanned dirty old man looking to cop a feel any chance he gets. Minus 13. He doesn't need a roll in the hay. He needs a good slap to learn to mind his manners.

Unfortunately the slap never happens. Carole finds the dirty old man routine amusing while Ramona and Sonja seem happy just to have the attention.  But minus an additional 13 when George goes from sex crazed fool to pervert as he nudges his erection into Sonja's backside at a club. I was really hoping that someone would throw the old man in the pool to cool off.

Dirty Dad

Then we have Ramona who besides bullying Aviva on multiple occasions about her leg, also kicks her out of the guest bathroom in her own home. And it doesn't end there.

Ramona and Sonja are so late to the dinner party that it causes Aviva to curse and send Mario to try and prod them along and that's after they manage to break the guest shower.  Minus 8. What the heck were they doing in the shower when they broke the hardware off the wall?  Nevermind, I don't think I want to know.

Why was Ramona in someone else's kitchen telling the staff how to serve dinner?  Minus 10. Does the woman have any idea how to be a guest in someone else's home?

The entire trip was awkward and uncomfortable and Aviva seems to be nearing the end of her rope.  What happens when she finally can't hold on?  We might find out next week.

Diamond Light Source is being used to improve low cost methods for carbon capture. Scientists from the University of Leeds are using the UK's national synchrotron to investigate the efficiency of calcium oxide (CaO) based materials as carbon dioxide (CO2) sorbents. Their results, published in the journal of Energy & Environmental Science, provide an explanation for one of the key mechanisms involved. This new knowledge will inform efforts to improve the efficiency of this economically viable method of carbon capture and storage.

Current techniques for post-combustion carbon capture filter out CO2 from a power plant's flue gases as they travel up a chimney. The filter is a solvent that absorbs the CO2, before being heated, releasing water vapour and leaving behind the CO2. In pre-combustion, the CO2 is filtered out by use of a catalytic converter before the fossil fuel is burned and the CO2 is diluted by other flue gases. These methods can prevent 80% to 90% of a power plant's carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere.

CaO based materials have a large range of applications including pre- and post-combustion carbon capture technologies and thermochemical fuel upgrading. They are low cost, high abundance, have a large sorption capacity and fast reaction rates during the chemical process. They capture CO2 in the temperature range 400-800 C via the formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) which can be regenerated with subsequent release of CO2, ready for compression and storage. However, after multiple capture and regeneration cycles, the materials' capacity for capture decreases due to the loss of surface area through sintering, a process that fuses powders together to create a single solid object. Although the surface area can be restored through hydration, the material suffers a reduction in mechanical strength. If these problems can be overcome, CaO based materials could provide a low cost answer for carbon capture on a very large scale.

Led by Dr Valerie Dupont and Dr Tim Comyn from the University of Leeds' Faculty of Engineering, the team carried out a series of experiments on Diamond's High resolution powder diffraction beamline, I11, using intense X-rays to study the carbon capture and hydration process in CaO based materials on the nano-scale. Their observations suggest a mechanism for the interaction between CaO and water during hydration.

"We found that the stresses in the calcium hydroxide phase when bound to CaO were more than 20 times higher than its strength, leading to disintegration and the generation of nano-sized crystallites. Although the generation of a high surface area is a good thing, mechanical friability needs to be kept in check in order to achieve long term reliability for these systems. Our analysis provides an explanation of the enhanced capture/disintegration observed in CaO in the presence of steam. Now we understand this, the next step is to develop methods for improving the materials used, and apply the same techniques to other systems," said Dr Tim Comyn, Faculty of Engineering, University of Leeds.

CaO readily forms a shell of calcium hydroxide when exposed to water in the air (right). Due to differences in atomic congurations (top left) between the oxide and hydroxides, enormous strains develop due to the interface. These strains of 0.78% lead to stresses 20 times higher than the rupture strength of the hydroxide leading to rupture and the generation of nanoparticles.

Deconvolution of the data generated by Diamond (bottom left) allows the Leeds team to determine the size and strain in these layers, from the breadth of the peaks (the peaks from CaOH are far narrower than CaO). Conventional X-ray sources would have considerable peak overlap, making this type of analysis almost impossible.

Roger Molinder, an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded PhD student on the project, describes, "Using the high resolution powder diffraction beamline at the Diamond synchrotron was key to this discovery; conventional X-ray sources such as those found at most Universities in the UK provide data with broad peaks, which do not make this sort of analysis possible. From a rigorous analysis of peak shapes arising from the data, we were able to determine the shape and size of the hydroxide phase, and determine the level of stress. Knowledge of these derived parameters is key to understanding the mechanism of sintering/disintegration."

Concerns about global warming have prompted both national and international efforts to curb CO2 emissions. CaO based materials are a promising candidate for the removal of CO2 from flue gases at temperatures between 400 and 800 C from processes such as fossil-fuel combustion. They are also being considered as a means to remove the CO2 that is generated as a result of thermochemical fuel upgrading with biomass sources, which are growing more and more popular as an alternative to fossil fuels. Using CaO based materials for carbon capture is just one of the ways to combat global warming. Since CaO based materials are low cost, there is an economic incentive to solve the problem of surface area loss to potentially turn this into a method for large scale CO2 capture. These recently published results are a promising step towards improving these low cost methods.

Most electronic gadgets that we use these days run on batteries. Sure they give you the option of portability but as users you do tend to incur recurring costs of the batteries they use. This is where rechargeable batteries make a world of difference.

Batteries are used in so many gadgets like remote controls, cameras and portable radios. Using rechargeable batteries for all your electronic gadgets does have quite a few advantages to it. One of the first and probably the most important advantage with rechargeable batteries is that they are better for the environment. All batteries whether rechargeable or not are quite harmful for the environment when disposed. Rechargeable batteries don?t need to be disposed often as they can be recharged numerous times before being disposed off.

The next biggest advantage with rechargeable batteries is the fact that it is a lot more economical. Rechargeable batteries may have a high initial cost but they make up for the additional cost as they can be recharged hundreds of times. This way you will end up saving quite a lot of money in the long run. Rechargeable batteries usually last for a year or maybe more which makes them a no brainer for electronics like your remote or portable radio.

Manufacturers like Panasonic are known to provide top notch rechargeable batteries for their cameras and video cameras. These batteries can be recharged thousands of times before you need to get another one. Panasonic rechargeable batteries like the DMW-BLD10 are long lasting and are perfect for the Lumix line of cameras.

With the advantages of rechargeable batteries becoming well known you have quite a few sealed rechargeable batteries which are used for varied applications. These could be used as emergency lights, or uninterrupted power supply units and many more. These batteries are quite safe to use and have a long useful life. They are quite safe for the environment as well.

Experts Offer Tips to Cut Kids' Screen Time During Summer

SATURDAY, July 28 (HealthDay News) -- Lots of parents would like to avoid having their kids spend the summer watching television or playing video games.

According to the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, reducing the amount of time spent in front of a computer or TV can boost health and happiness, prompting families to do more physical activity and get creative in finding other ways to spend their time.

The nonprofit organization, which was formed to combat childhood obesity, offered tips to cut down on screen time:

  • Schedule screen time. Decide in advance what shows will be watched, what video games will be played or how much Internet time is allowed.
  • Keep track. Have children write down the amount of time they spend in front of the TV or a computer screen. If they realize they are spending more time in front of a screen than they thought, they may be motivated to change their habits.
  • Be positive. Set goals for reducing screen time and offer rewards for reaching them.
  • Do something else. Go outside, join a club, play a sport, get a hobby.
  • Designate screen-free time. Don't turn on the TV first thing in the morning. Turn off the TV during dinner. Instead, eat outside or have a family talk. Remove electronics from bedrooms.
  • Put electronics away. Try storing all electronics in one room for an entire day and not touching them, or cover screens to help you forget about them.
  • Read instead. Take the kids to the library. Allow children to stay up 15 minutes past their bedtime as a reward for reading.

Is Romney Going to Repeat the Palin Strategy and Choose Florida?s Attorney General Pam Bondi?

A wee personsal confession: in 2008, I was not terribly interested in politics. I had a proud history of making protest votes for President, back to voting for Jack Anderson. I was not keen about Obama, although I weakly preferred him to Hillary because?..she?d bring back the old Clinton finance team. But if you had forced me to state my views as of that summer, I would have said I was less keen about McCain.

Something possessed me to watch the VP acceptance speech for the Republicans. About 20 minutes into watching Palin, I was so appalled that I left my TV and went to my computer to make a small donation to Obama.

I gather I was not alone. The Democrats got 8x as the Republicans in the 24 hours following her debut as the official Republican VP nominee.

This election, despite Romney?s shambolic Presidential campaign (his London gaffes were epic), he?s running neck and neck with Obama. The fact that he has any hope is due to Obama?s fealty to big corporate interests, particularly banks, and his neoliberal instincts. In early 2009, with the financiers cowed and desperate, and the country eager for a new direction, Obama could have take far more decisive steps to right the economy. But again and again, Obama has sold out ordinary citizens, from folding on a proposal to tax to end the preferential treatment of incomes of private equity magnates (they structure their deals to get capital gains treatment when they have no capital at risk), to pushing through a mortgage settlement that did perilous little for borrowers but served as a back door bailout to banks, or his enriching Big Pharma and the health care insurer though the ACA.

But Romney may be determined to snatch defeat from the jaws of a possible victory. Business Insider reports that the newest addition to the list of possible VP candidates is?Florida?s Pam Bondi. We?ve refrained from writing about her at NC merely because there seemed to be far more important targets. But contrast her conduct as the AG of one of the ground zeros of the foreclosure crisis, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada. Shortly after the robosigning scandal broke, Masto got legislation passed that made it a crime (a felony) to file improper paperwork with the courts, subject to 10 years in jail and fines of $10,000 per violation. (Note that this legislation did not change the legal requirement for foreclosure; it simply criminalized failure to comply. What did Bondi do? She fired two staffers in her office who were taking document fraud seriously.

Per Business Insider, this is what recommends her:

? She?s a woman. And she?s young. While the Romney campaign is said to be looking for experience and gravitas, there are obvious demographic advantages to picking someone who can appeal to women and young people.

? She?s from Florida. Bondi could give Romney a much-needed advantage in the crucial swing state.

? She tried to take down Obamacare ? and almost won. Bondi was the lead attorney general in the lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act. With her as VP, Romney would have one less problem to deal with.

? She?s really pretty.

The Romney campaign is getting her to stump for him in the Northeast on a limited basis.

The article warns that she?s probably not high on the prospect list and selecting her would invite a firestorm of Palin comparisons. Contacts in Florida say that Palin is probably smarter than Bondi (one wonders how she graduated from law school if true) and that her prior career as a prosecutor in Hillsboro County was light on actually filing cases and heavy on acting as a spokesperson.

So in the unlikely-but-not-impossible outcome that Bondi gets the nod, one can imagine that the campaign will portray her asleep-at-the-switch on the foreclosure fraud beat as a great plus. MBS Guy notes:

There is something so perfect about Romney picking a VP who would help him win the anti-?deadbeat borrower? vote. It seems fitting that the foreclosure crisis should be part of the election story ? but in a totally bizarro way.

With Bondi as his running mate, Romney could paint Obama as the candidate who did too much to help deadbeat borrowers, and worsen the housing crisis, by stretching out foreclosures via the AG foreclosure settlement.

I think that would help ensure that neither candidate would say anything remotely truthful on issues like housing and the economy.

One has to assume that if the Romney campaign were to go for a woman candidate, Condi Rice would trump Bondi handily. But the fact that Bondi has been added to the list seems mighty peculiar, unless this is a device to build a relationship with her and dangle other shiny toys before he so she?ll stump hard for Romney in Florida.

Temporary Knucksline: SNHU MFA Graduate: Darren Cormier ...

Amici:

Meet Darren Cormier ... an SNHU MFA brother and graduate.? Darren is presently working in publishing. An avid runner, he is training for his first marathon: Hartford in October. He?s also a die-hard New York Mets fan (God bless him), having gotten hooked in 1984, Dwight Gooden's rookie season, Darryl Strawberry's second.

Here's his bio from his website (and that's Darren below):? My earliest memories are of reading the "funny pages" of the newspaper in nursery school. As a hyperactive child, my family would always say that when I wasn't moving, my brain was, and that the only thing that could get me to stop talking or moving would be to put a book in my hands. Given this love of books and reading, it only seemed natural that I would try my own hand at writing.

From the age of four, it seems I was destined to become a writer.? I have written and worked for newspapers, publishing companies, the biotech industry, medical publications, and short fiction. I have also worked as a bartender, cook, retail cashier, envelope stuffer, data entry clerk, and a very brief stint hawking Snapple on the streets of Boston.? I received my Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University in July 2010 and my Bachelor's of Arts in Journalism from the University of Hartford.? I presently reside in the Boston area with a growing collection of books.

This is from the illustrious Merle Drown:? Darren writes inventive, original fiction.? His stories cover an amazing range in character and subject, from an estranged middle-aged Japanese couple to a young man grieving the death of his best friend to a former child musician trying, at last, to play the piece that flummoxed him.? Darren will give you belly pains of laughter, then on the next page break your heart.? Darren experiments in form and structure, but his stories aren?t experiments.? They accomplish what writers most want?they pull the reader into the vibrant world of his pages. An impressive artist, Darren is always daring something new and making it his own.

And here's the bio that appears on the cover of my book (and that's me at work above):? Darren Cormier was born in Massachusetts. He received his MFA in Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University, where his short story ?Opus No. 1? won the MFA award for fiction and was subsequently published in Amoskeag.

His work has also appeared in Opium Magazine, Every DayFiction, Arch Literary Journal, and Ether Books, among others. Helives in Boston with a growing collection of books. This is his firstbook.? List of publications:? "Autobiography(or how I got to where I am today)"- Opium Magazine "Little JohnnyHartmann Saves the World" - Meetinghouse "Opus No. 1" - Amoskeag (winnerof the 2010 SNHU MFA writing contest) "Cough Drops" - Every Day Fiction "A Wobbly Triptych Concerning That Historically Tortured Theme Known asLove" - Raft Magazine "ThePretzel" - Arch Literary Journal - also chosen as a top 30 finalistfor the 2012 Micro Award "WhatHappened With Craig" - one forty fiction "Midwestern Relocation" - Seedpod Publishing "A Solution", "She Gets Paid on Friday" - EtherBooks "Wittgenstein the Photographer"- Paper Nautilus "Acceptance","Fingers", "Honesty Is The Best Policy", "New Town, New Beginning", "Your Pain Will Set You Free" -Thrice Fiction? Here's a link to 'ThePretzel'

Darren?s first book, A Little Soul: 140 Twitterstories, is a collection of micro fiction, each story or section of a story 140 characters or less. Some of the pieces previously appeared in Raft Magazine, one forty fiction, and Thrice Fiction. The book is available for all eReaders and will be available in print in August 2012.

Some samples from Darren?s book:

Honesty is the Best Policy:? "I used to want to know where you went at night. Now I just want to know you won't ask me the same question."

On Reading Short Stories? Finishing a short story gives me a sense of accomplishment, small and clean. Novels are so big and messy.

'X' Marks The Spot? We had dug twelve holes before we realized the map was wrong. How to dispose of the shovels before mom used them on us was now the question.

The Lord of the Rings Reinterpreted? There was good. And evil. And there was a ring... ?and a whole lot of weird names and dense prose while things named hobbits try to destroy it.

Darren is currently working on short stories and revising his novella "I'm Hoping This Will Work", which is about a young man in his mid-20s trying to overcome the death of his best friend which he feels responsible for. The novella was the centerpiece of his MFA thesis, a collection of short stories titled I Am My Own Nemesis.

Two paragraphs from the first page below:

"I am hoping this will work, that when everything is finished, the screaming phone calls, the booze, nameless women, nightmares, my inability to read more than five pages at a time, and the blood, all that fucking blood?when my front door is closed and locked for the final time, I?ll be throwing my clothes in the back seat, driving those two blocks, one coffee in hand, another in the cup holder, driving to pick up Andy, and we?ll drive like we always talked about, to Montreal, Madagascar, cross-country, straight across that Atlantic Ocean, anywhere, really it doesn?t matter;? we?re just driving, him and me, anywhere... ...? That?s what will happen, and I won?t be kneeling in my room amid a stack of books and scotch at noon, socks that haven?t been changed in three days clinging to my feet. I?ll be at work, sending him stupid forwards, making plans for later, for this weekend, or making plans with a girl that I will have met at a party.? He?ll answer the phone when I call. I won?t jump at the sound of tires screeching, I won?t be afraid to leave my house and walk to the center; the walk to Davis won?t remind me of everything from that night.? It won?t remind me of anything, because nothing will have happened."

Transsiberian ? The Principessa Ann Marie and I enjoyed this one quite a bit.? It had us guessing what was going on and what would happen next.? I loved the scenery (the cold) of Siberia/Russia, while the Principessa shivered on the couch.? A great cast and a hell of a storyline will keep your eyes riveted to the screen.? I was searching for Emily Mortimer movies on NetFlix when I can across this one, but I wouldn?t know who she (or Tilda Swinton) was/were if not for a wonderfully dark movie called Young Adam I watched a few years back.? Transsiberian is a keeper ?

HBO?s The Newsroom ? Speaking of Emily Mortimer, here she is again ? and although I haven?t seen all the episodes, what I have seen has been fun ? I especially enjoy seeing the Koch brothers exposed for the 1% policy setting motherfuckers they are ? and last night I watched as one of the characters did what I suspect many of us would like to do?punch that shit stirring imbecile and right wing radio God, Fat Limbaugh, in his fat face (minus the computer screen) ?

What Higher Education Will Look Like in 2020 [STUDY]

In 2020, students may be able to travel to faraway continents, and attend a school halfway around the world.

[More from Mashable: These 10 Videos Turn Tough Topics Into Child?s Play]

Experts predict technology will facilitate distance learning outside of traditional classrooms, according to a survey published by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. In the study, 1,021 education experts and stakeholders including technology researchers, university directors, venture capitalists and Ivy League university professors, relayed their predictions about the future of higher education.

About 60% of respondents believe higher education will look completely different from the way it is today. While, 39% of participants think the traditional college structure will not change drastically aside from a deeper integration of in-classroom technology.

[More from Mashable: Jeff Bezos Hijacks Amazon.com to Announce Education Initiative]

For now, class attendance, in-person participation and on-campus commitment are key factors of college success. In the future, that may all change.

Teleconferencing, online universities and distance learning will lead to hybrid campuses, experts said. Hybrid campuses will incorporate online learning plus in-person class meetings.

The ballooning cost of a college degree is driving the need for a new school system. Outstanding student debt in the U.S. is upwards of $1 trillion.

?Under current and foreseeable economic conditions, traditional classroom instruction will become decreasingly viable financially," Mike Liebhold, senior researcher and distinguished fellow at The Institute for the Future, wrote. "As high-speed networks become more widely accessible tele-education and hybrid instruction will become more widely employed.?

SEE ALSO: How Higher Education Uses Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC]

Many survey participants think the future educational structure will tackle economic stress and educational divides. Online non-profits and online universities are beginning disrupting the space, hopefully making education more accessible and affordable in the long run.

For example, The Khan Academy started by one man on YouTube now provides more than 3,300 free videos for anyone in the world. On the website, students and adults can brush up on a wide range of math, science, finance and humanities skills. Anyone in the world can utilize the extensive video library to learn organic chemistry or microeconomics.

Experts also believe out-of-the-classroom learning will inspire innovation that's lacking on campuses now.

"We spew it from a lectern; we expect it to be spewed back in a test," Jeff Jarvis, director of the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism wrote. "That kind of education does not produce the innovators who would invent Google. The real need for education in the economy will be re-education."

What would you change about the higher education system? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Mauti determined to keep Nittany Lions upbeat

CHICAGO (AP) ? Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti said Friday he knows of only two or three players who are planning to leave the Nittany Lions following the severe sanctions imposed earlier this week by the NCAA.

Speaking at Big Ten media day, the senior said the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal isn't the players' fault, but added it's a situation they must deal with. One way he sees to do that is go out and play inspired football under first-year coach Bill O'Brien.

"We didn't want to be in this position," Mauti said. "At the same time we're not going to let anybody tear this program apart."

Mauti did not say specifically who he thought would leave. Asked about star tailback Silas Redd, Mauti says the two have talked and he hopes Redd will make the right decision.

"I spoke with him and his dad. I lived with Silas for a year and a half. Silas and I are very close and I talked to him," Mauti said. "I just hope Silas makes the right decision for him and for the right reasons."

Redd was a second-team All-Big Ten selection last year, when he ran for 1,241 yards in an offense without a star quarterback.

Mauti also made it clear that he didn't appreciate the presence of Illinois coaches in State College this week, even though he acknowledged they were not breaking any rules by being there. Penn State players, under the NCAA sanctions announced Monday, can transfer without sitting out a season.

"They weren't hounding me personally. But I know for a fact they reached out to our players," Mauti said.

"I don't want to make this a feuding thing. But at the same time, if you're from our conference and you're going to try and steal our players and then wish us well, then I got a serious problem with that."

New Illinois coach Tim Beckman said Thursday that his coaches were not on campus but at establishments in State College where they were available to talk to players about their desire to leave.

"Don't get me wrong. He's not breaking any rules because there are no rules," Mauti said. "It's been set up right now for our team to just fall apart ... piece by piece and guys just go everywhere they want because that door is open."

But Matui said that's not going to happen, even though the Nittany Lions are banned from bowl games the next four years.

"Somebody leaves, it's their decision, a big decision," he said. "We'll wish them well. We're not going to worry about those guys when we put the pads on."

Nittany Lions guard John Urschel, who earned a math degree in just three years, said he's been contacted about leaving, but wouldn't disclose who was interested. He said a lot of players have been contacted by a lot of schools.

"Everyone's getting calls. We've got some really good players on our team. We're all just trying to stick together," he said. "Coming out of high school, I didn't get much attention or get many offers. I believe I owe it to Penn State to stay here and finish my career. I'm in 100 percent. Penn State has been too good to me."

Defensive tackle Jordan Hill said he never gave a thought to leaving.

"Nah," he said.

And being cast as the team who has to play after the imposition of sanctions is not what the team is dwelling on with fall camp starting early next month.

"What matters to us is how we fought through it. For us, that's all we'll ever think about," Hill said. "We'll get together when we're old guys and we're not going to talk about the sanctions and how bad that was, we're going to talk about how we fought through it and how we went out there and kicked people's butts."

Matsui said he'd read the Freeh report and didn't want to elaborate on its findings.

"No one (current player) had anything to do with that, but yeah we're paying the consequences and that's OK," he said. "That's the situation we're in. ... We're looking to create a new legacy here, something special."

Hot, dry weather heightens West Nile virus risk

CHICAGO (AP) ? Hot, dry weather in the Midwest has created the perfect conditions for mosquitoes that carry West Nile Virus.

The Culex mosquito breeds in still-damp ditches and underground storm water basins.

Indiana, Ohio and Illinois are reporting higher rates of infected mosquitoes compared with past years. More infected mosquitoes means a higher West Nile risk for humans. Illinois and Oklahoma report earlier-than-usual cases of human infection.

What's more, the dry weather means the pesky floodwater mosquito is scarce. That makes people think mosquitoes aren't a problem and gives the Culex mosquito a chance to sneak up and bite.

Health officials urge people to wear insect repellent though they may not be noticing biting mosquitoes.
