Teradata, Information Builders roll out BI appliance

April 29, 2011

By Chris Kanaracus | IDG News Service

Teradata and Information Builders have developed a data warehousing package that bundles the latter's WebFOCUS BI (business intelligence) software with a Teradata analytic appliance, the companies announced Friday.

The product will allow customers to get a data warehousing platform up and running more quickly, the companies said.

[ Explore the current trends and solutions in BI with InfoWorld's interactive Business Intelligence iGuide. | Discover what's new in business applications with InfoWorld's Technology: Applications newsletter. ]

Pricing starts at under $550,000 for the package, which also includes Information Builders' iWay DataMigrator tool for data extraction, transformation, and loading. This means customers can use the same metadata "in both the warehouse building and usage phases, accelerating warehouse implementation," the companies said in a statement.

Appliances can be tested on-site with a customer's own data, it adds.

Some new professional services for the appliances are also available. Pricing ranges from $50,000 "for simple query and report development" up to $550,000 for "data model development and deployment," according to a statement.

The announcement reflects a growing trend toward "analytic solution appliances" aimed at specific purposes, Forrester Research analyst James Kobielus wrote in a recent report.

Teradata had already been selling a number of Accelerate data warehousing packages. Some target areas like finance and marketing, while others aim at verticals such as health care and gaming. IBM and Oracle also sell a variety of tailored appliances.

Still, the market for these products is not yet mature, and the range of product choices is limited, according to Kobielus.

In addition, customers "must recognize that some assembly will be required before you can realize the promise of quick business value," he wrote. "Depending on the amount of custom code you and your systems integrators need to write and the range of complementary solutions you need to deploy, these prepackaged appliances may not appreciably accelerate project delivery over and above the traditional bespoke approach."

European Nations Warn Syria On Crackdown

European nations summoned Syrian ambassadors Wednesday in a coordinated demand that President Bashar Assad stop gunning down his people, and Germany said sanctions were possible if the crackdown did not ease.

France, Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain told the ambassadors that they condemned the violence and said that Assad must change tactics, according to France's foreign ministry.

The German government said it would strongly support EU sanctions against the Syrian leadership and German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said an arms embargo, asset freezes and travel restrictions were possible.

"If there is not an immediate change of course by the Syrian leadership, the international community will have to come up with consequences then sanctions against Syria will be inevitable," Westerwelle said.

The European condemnation was a significant personal blow to Assad, a British-educated self-styled reformer who has made a high priority of efforts to bring Syria back into the global mainstream, efforts that included hosting a series of visits from European diplomats.

It was far from clear, however, if Europe's shaming of Assad would have enough impact to moderate his government's brutal handling of the Syrian uprising.

"This is a revolutionary movement and if he doesn't stop it, it will mean regime change and possibly civil war," said Joshua Landis, director of the University of Oklahoma's Center for Middle East Studies, who runs a blog called Syria Comment. "The threat of sanctions from Europe isn't going to be uppermost in his mind."

Landis said that Europeans sanctions could strengthen the effect of U.S. trade and financial sanctions slapped on Syria in 2004 and 2006, mainly on counterterrorism grounds.

"It could help bring down the regime much more quickly," he said.

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Council based at the United Nations' European headquarters in Geneva agreed to a U.S. request for a special session Friday focused on Syria. It is unusual for the U.N.'s 47-nation council to agree to such a request singling out the behavior of one nation.

"It is entirely appropriate that the Human Rights Council condemn willful government violence against peaceful political protestors," the U.S. ambassador to the council, Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe, said.

The EU's political and security committee was also planning to discuss Syria on Friday in Brussels and "all options are on the table," Michael Mann, a spokesman for European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, said.

U.S. officials have said Washington has begun drawing up targeted sanctions against him, his family and his inner circle to boost pressure on them to halt the repression. Four European countries Britain, France, Germany and Portugal have circulated a draft media statement to the U.N. Security Council condemning the violence in Syria. The council will discuss the statement Wednesday.

The relentless government crackdown against pro-democracy protesters has killed more than 400 people across Syria since mid-March, with 120 dead over the weekend, according to the U.N. Security forces have conducted sweeping arrests and raids across the country.

The U.N.'s top human rights official, Navi Pillay, has appealed to Assad to withdraw his forces and is preparing to visit Syria and independently assess the situation on the ground.

Britain's top diplomat insisted Wednesday it isn't too late for Assad to embrace democratic reforms, despite his violent crackdown on protesters. But Foreign Secretary William Hague told BBC radio that Assad may not command enough power to convince other members of his inner circle of the need for changes.

"One of the difficulties in Syria," said Hague, who visited Syria in January for talks, "is that President Assad's power depends on a wide group of people in his own family and, of course, other members of his own government."

Updated! Guber Elections may not hold in Northern Nigeria, as ...

Murdered Ikechukwu Ukeoma

Murdered Ikechukwu Ukeoma, a corper

A text message circulating among members of the, National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, and made available to Elombah.com reads: ?k Ukeoma was a Corper in Bauchi until monday when he paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our democracy. he ran to a police station when he was being chased now he has been confirmed dead!!!His fellow corpers sent this:

FELLOW CORPERS, we have been killed/butchered like suya?meat, maimed all cos of the elections, nobody is saying anything about it! Another election is coming up on Tuesday (26th april), they would still want to use US without still saying anything, and some of us r still stranded in the north, maybe this time they will SLAUGHTER THEM ALL if we don't do something. We urge every CORPER to BOYCOTT tuesday (26th april) Elections!?

Ukeoma is the murdered National Youth Service Corp, NYSC member in Bauchi. He was killed because on the day of the Presidential Election he prevented some under-age registered "voters" from voting and that attracted the ire of some adult voters in the polling unit. Some CPC adults demanded he hand over the unused ballot papers to them but he refused. He was almost lynched but for the prompt intervention of the Policemen attached to his polling centre who escorted him to the INEC office. He then became a target for attack.

He was later Killed in a Bauchi police station where he was taking refuge with other youth corpers while serving his country.

Elombah.com learnt that members of the NYSC are fleeing crisis-prone local government areas in some states in the north six days to the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections.

Many of the corps members, especially in Katsina and Bauchi states, are taking refuge in army barracks and the NYSC orientation camps while some have travelled out of states like Kano, Borno and Kaduna and back to their home states or Abuja out of fear that they were no longer safe in Northern Nigeria.?

A youth corper who fled Nassarawa state told elombah.com he is not going back. ?Another said he only escaped death "by whiskers".

?

Another text message in circulation says: "DO NOT LEAVE... YOUR HOUSES,No more CDS or Meetings! until FG removes every SINGLE CORPER(dead or alive)from the NORTH and reform NYSC. Don't think cos u r not there, those r our brothers/sisters/friends/children out there....they(FG)Have from Now till monday to do that! PARENTS and kind hearted NIGERIANS Pls SUPPORT/ENDORSE this COURSE. Pls RE-BROADCAST, paste on Facebook, send as sms, tweet it till FG gets the message! what we sign to was "UNDER THE SUN AND IN THE RAIN" not in "TEARS AND BLOOD & MUTILATED BODIES" tell every corper u know to stay back and remain at home!!!!"

?

The Bauchi state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Amana Abakasanga, had confirmed the death of 4 corps members and added that 26 out of 51 corps members posted to Jammare, Giade, Misau, Azare, Dambam and Itas Gadu areas were rescued by the police and another 20 still missing.

But some of the corps members said at least 11 of their colleagues had so far been murdered in the crisis.?

One of them said they had ?decided not to take part in the election again since the government cannot protect us.??

He also claimed that they had not been paid the money promised them by INEC.

The fate of the ?missing? corps members was still unknown.

In Katsina State, for instance, traumatised corps members have deserted Daura, the hometown of the Congress for Progressive Change presidential candidate, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, and other crisis-prone towns such as Funtua, Kankari, Jibia and Malumfashipita.?

It was learnt that armed security agents escorted seven commercial buses that conveyed the corps members from Daura to the state NYSC orientation camp in Katsina.

The corps members who had spent three nights at the Daura police station were said to have contributed N150 each for the trip.?

Violent protesters had set the ?corpers lodge? known as Danbuka Local Education Authority Lodge, in Daura ablaze on Sunday in the orgy of violence that gripped the state after the poll.?

Meanwhile Punch Newspaper reports that that their correspondents, who visited the NYSC orientation camp in Katsina observed that there were over 500 corps members there. More reportedly arrived the camp from different parts of the state after our correspondent left at about 4pm on Thursday.?

Corps members, who acted as presiding officers in the presidential elections, were mostly the target of attacks in many communities in the North.

One of them, who gave his name simply as Ikenna, said he lost everything he had.?

?We cannot go back to that place (Daura). We cannot risk our lives because of the N7,000 that INEC will pay us.? Ikenna said.?

Another corps member added that but for a friendly taxi driver, who alerted them, they would have been burnt alive.?

?He (taxi driver) started shouting in front of our lodge that ?they (rioters) are coming, they are coming,? but we didn?t know what he was talking about until they nearly got to us,? he said, declining to give his name.?

In Funtua, another NYSC member, who pleaded anonymity, said he saw the charred remains of a neighbour who shared a building with him after the house had been burnt by the rioters.?

He said that he managed to flee and vowed never to go back to Funtua.?

?I just want to go back home. All my credentials are gone. As it is, the only property I have is my mobile phone,? he lamented.

The story was the same from the other corps members from Malumfashi, Kankara and Jibia.?

Anjolaoluwa, a female corps members from Oyo State, said she might never recover from the trauma.?

Amidst tears, she told one of our correspondents how rampaging youths attached their residence in Funtua and burnt down the place.?

?Many of them just came and started beating us. We had to jump over the fence and ran to the main road. I lost everything, including my certificates and laptop,? she said.?

PUNCH said the state Coordinator of the NYSC, Mallam Abdul Taura, who declined to respond to inquiries was at the orientation camp on Thursday afternoon to address the corps members.?

Taura told them that they were safe as security was guaranteed at the camp.?

In Bauchi State, corps members also deserted the troubled areas in the state for fear of further attacks by irate youths.?

This came just as Governor Isah Yuguda assured them of adequate security in the state. He also relocated over 150 of them to the State Security Service Training School for safety.?

The premises of the state secretariat of the NYSC is deserted except for a few workers who were going about their official duties.?

One of the workers, said, ?Today (Thursday) is supposed to be their CDS (Community Development Service) day but as you can see, none of them is around. Since it is no longer safe for them to move around, it is better they stay where they will be safe.??

Scary text message in circulation has no helped matters

this text message is in circulation also shown to Elombah.com reporter says:

?To all muslims; we must reclaim kaduna; install a muslim Governor in taraba; plant a dep gov in Benue; install a woman as governor (which is harram but she's a necessary weapon of change) in plateau. We must capture central Nigeria. Council of ulama, northern Nigeria. Pls cirulate it to ur pple?.

Bauchi State Governor Isa Yuguda had in a statement assured the corps members of the determination of his administration to protect their lives and property.?

The governor, who pleaded with the corps members to be calm, also condoled with the NYSC and the parents of those that were killed in Kano Staste. The NYSC members are currently taking refuge in army barracks in Bompai and Horoto police barracks.

At NYSC headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, the members of staff were mourning.?

Most them, who clustered in and around the lobby of the building were overheard discussing the deaths of some of the NYSC members in hushed tunes.?

Reports say hoodlums protesting the defeat of Buhari in the April 16 Presidential election killed 200 people in six northern states.?

When contacted on the threat by some corps members to boycott the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections scheduled for Tuesday, the NYSC Deputy Director (Public Relations), Mrs. Chynwe Ojukwu, said the issues involved revolved around policy.

?The Director-General (Maj.-Gen. Ismaila Tsiga) has travelled to Bauchi to assess the situation. When he comes back and is ready to make any pronouncement, we will let you know.??

?

Elombah.com was shown a letter from ?a Nigerian sister who happens to be a devout muslim? pouring out her grief and anger over the political killings of the corpers.

?

She wrote:

"Bismillahi rahmanir rahim, Almighty Allah, we remain at your mercy, we seek your favour, we seek your forgiveness, your guidance, your support and your love, we cast ourselves unto you and rely upon you to guide us right.

On this day, tens of thousands if not hundreds lie dead and buried in a short flurry of just a few months, so many things have touched the innermost part of us all and tested our faith. This week, in Nigeria, as we all sat in our homes in various countries worldwide celebrating the much publicised Nigerian presidential elections and the reports by world observers that we had seen the freest and fairest election in Nigerian history, others were sitting, plotting and setting up strategy on how to kill, slaughter, destroy and loot randomly in fits of rage. What makes me angry, saddened, shocked, bewildered, bereft with worry and grief is the fact that attackers turned on defenceless young people who were posted to the various regions of the country as youth corpers. So is it okay for people angry that their obsessive following had not resulted in a win, crazed by poverty, hunger, ignorance and deprivation, no it isn't and again as always, if anyone thinks I am disloyal for disassociating myself from these people who are described as muslim, please delete me.

"I am so unhappy today, inalilahi wa inalilahi rajiun, another readying for mass burying in Nigeria again.....these people families trusted them into the government hands, donated their skill to deprived and poor parts of the country...... There is no room within my heart for revenge, fire or hate there is no room within my mind for any thoughts like these.

I cannot find the words to say just how it is I feel but I know from deepest hurt I must forgiveness find. The hurt that?s been done to us cuts sore like a knife, but we must not, repay in kind what has been done to us. Instead we must try and find the way that is so hard, and reach out our loving hands to find some friendship now. There can be no more healing thing than opening wide our eyes and seeing that most other folk are really just like us. By David Gould whose daughter was slain in in the London Bombings of 2005 and it spells out the persistent message we need to spread and continue to propagate.

"Ya Allah, there is not a man who is without any worry, any concern and we pray we continue to be blessed with continued favour, grace, blessings, prosperity and peace. Panasonic Chargepad wirelessly juices up mobile chargers, nothing else

We've seen plenty of wireless charging solutions that employ inductive power and other technologies to charge devices directly (heck, your next car may even have a Powermat in its console), but Panasonic's Chargepad may be the first such product to charge, well, other chargers, rather than gadgets themselves. At launch, the Chargepad will only be compatible with two models, the QE-PL101-W and QE-PL201-W, which you can use to juice up cell phones and other USB-compatible devices on the go. We'd love to see the company embedding inductive charging components in its cameras and other devices instead, but if you're an early adopter who happens to live in Japan, then you can expect to pay between $110-130 (open pricing, depending on battery capacity) for the Chargepad and a mobile charger when these hit stores on June 24.

Apple, Google Will Testify to Senate on Location Tracking

Representatives from both Apple and Google will testify at a Congressional hearing next month on consumer privacy and smartphones , two U.S. senators confirmed on Thursday.

"I'm pleased that Apple and Google have confirmed that they'll be sending representatives to testify at my upcoming hearing on mobile technology and privacy," Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) said in a statement issued today.

Franken, who chairs a new Senate privacy panel, added that the hearing was a "first step" in Congressional inquiries whether federal laws have kept up with the surge in mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets.

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), the chairman of the Senate's Judiciary Committee, also acknowledged the participation of the two firms. "It is essential that policy makers and the American people have complete and accurate information about the privacy implications of these new technologies," Leahy said in a separate statement.

Franken kicked off the inquiry last week on the same day that two British researchers reported that Apple's iPhone and 3G iPad concealed an unencrypted file containing thousands of location data entries going months. The unsecured file was also backed up on users' PCs and Macs during synchronization.

On Monday, Franken asked both Apple and Google to testify at his hearing. Wednesday, Leahy followed up with a letter to the two companies, urging them to accept Franken's invitation as he noted "deep concern that [ Android Phones and iPhones] collect, store and track user location data without the user's consent."

While most of the focus has been on Apple and its iOS -- the mobile operating system that powers the iPhone and iPad -- Google's Android also collects location information from users' smartphones.

Yesterday, Apple denied that it tracked users but said it would make changes to iOS. Later in the day, CEO Steve Jobs told the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times that his company would participate at the hearing.

Meanwhile, Google has said it collects location data from Android phones only when owners opt-in. "Any location data that is sent back to Google location servers is anonymized and is not tied or traceable to a specific user," the company told the IDG News Service on Monday.

Earlier today, a crisis communication expert criticized Apple for taking a week to respond to questions about iPhone location tracking, saying that the company "dropped the ball in a big way."

And because Congress had gotten involved, Apple faces a long investigation into its privacy practices, predicted Michael Robinson, a senior vice president with Levick Strategic Communications, a Washington, D.C. firm that helps companies deal with public relations emergencies.

"This is in its nascent stage, it will be going on for a long, long time," Robinson said. "Apple has lots more to do on this, if only because Congress is going to have hearings."

Franken's hearing, which is set to begin at 10 a.m. ET on May 10 , will also take testimony from officials with the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, as well as from Justin Brookman, director of consumer privacy at the Center for Democracy & Technology.

In an interview Wednesday with Computerworld, Brookman applauded Apple's acknowledgement of the privacy problem and its promise to modify iOS, but questioned the company's flat denial that it never tracked users.

"I'm glad that they are fixing what they call bugs," Brookman said. "But I take exception with their strong denial that they track users."

Your Smartphone Is Tracking You, But Don't Worry

Critics are up in arms since learning that the Apple iPhone keeps records of everywhere the mobile devices go. Technological tracking, in general, has increased as mobile devices, GPS systems, and Internet services such as Facebook and Amazon.com find new ways to gather and use consumer data. Host Michel Martin speaks with Sree Sreenivasan, dean of Student Affairs and Digital Media Professor at Columbia Journalism School. He says this tracking is neither new nor necessarily bad.

Copyright ? 2011 National Public Radio?. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

MICHEL MARTIN, host:

We're going to switch gears now and talk about data mining. Apple has gotten a lot of bad press lately for keeping detailed records of everywhere the iPhone goes. And by extension that means everywhere its customers go. Yesterday, Apple's chief executive, Steve Jobs, told The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal that the iPhone did not intend to track its users but was trying to make Internet service faster by locating nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers.

Still, Jobs concedes that his company should've done a better job of educating customers about the software, and he says a fix is on the way. But this isn't the only modern technology to track and keep customer data.

Joining me now to discuss the issue of privacy in the age of modern technology is Sree Sreenivasan. He's on the phone with us from his office at Columbia University, where he's dean of student affairs and digital media professor at Columbia Journalism School in New York. Welcome. Thanks for joining us.

Professor SREE SREENIVASAN (Columbia University): Thanks for having me.

MARTIN: How upset are people about this issue?

Prof. SREENIVASAN: Well, people are upset when they hear about these kinds of tracking situations going on. But I tell people they shouldn't be - they could be upset, but they shouldn't be surprised. There's a difference between those. And the reason is that we are being tracked by our devices, by our computer programs, by just being part of modern society. Someone somewhere or multiple someones are tracking you all the time.

MARTIN: Is this seen as a particular breach of trust between iPhone customers and Apple or is this just part of the broader, you know, array of the issues, of privacy issues that people are thinking about all the time?

Prof. SREENIVASAN: It depends on who you talk to. There are people who felt that this was, you know, absolutely kind of - came out of nowhere, that this happened. But as we've seen with many other technologies, that this should not - again, it should not have been a surprise, but I think Apple is getting a lot of credit for saying, OK, we're going to fix this problem. It wasn't intentional.

I thought it was interesting that both of these major star CEOs, one CEO of Apple and one CEO of America, both of them had to sort of go on the air and talk about an issue that they didn't want to talk about. I'm talking about Obama's birth certificate and this yesterday and saying, look, you know, here's what we know and here is what we're going to do to stop the noise around this particular topic.

MARTIN: The iPhone isn't the only technology that tracks user behavior. You know, obviously credit card records record where you spend money. Grocery stores keep track of the food you buy. And I just wanted to ask, is it that more people are gathering the data or is it just that this information is already at their fingertips and they're just finding ways to profit from it?

Prof. SREENIVASAN: Well, this is the question that we have to deal with, that if - I think that people are surprised when they hear, for example, that they're being tracked everywhere they go online, just on a computer. When you go, people are tracking and ads are being served up based on your traffic patterns. And the question becomes, is it the fact that they're doing it or is it the fact that they're trying to make more money from it?

I wonder if there would be a phone company that comes out and says we will track you less, please use us. But the bigger problem is that every time consumers have been given a choice between privacy and convenience, they have always picked convenience.

MARTIN: I was going to ask you about that, because there are those who would say, well, you know what? I like the fact that my iPhone knows where I am. What if something happens to me? You know, what if somebody steals it or me? And that way you can find me. Is that the dominant point of view?

Prof. SREENIVASAN: Many people have on their phones software that once you lose your iPhone, you hit a button and on a computer screen on the Web you can pinpoint the location of the lost phone or the stolen phone. And we've had people who were able to recover their phones like that. Or if you are, in fact, kidnapped, maybe people can - the law enforcement folks can come and find you.

So it again depends on what situation you're in. What sounds like a horrible, terrible invasion of privacy at that moment, if that's what helps you escape from a kidnapping or be found, you'll love that technology. So this is the dance that we do with technology and the fact that we're being - everything about us has become more digital.

You know, you're in a car and you go through these toll bridges with - using the electronic payments system, they know exactly where you are. And that's another way in which you're being tracked.

MARTIN: All right. We know exactly where you are. You are at Columbia University, where you are the dean of student affairs and a professor of digital media. That was Sree Sreenivasan. He with us on the phone from his office in New York. At least I think that's where he is. Professor, thank you so much for joining us.

Prof. SREENIVASAN: Thank you.

'Quagmire Of Bureaucracy' Stifles Gulf Spill Research

Although images of dead birds and blackened marshes in the Gulf of Mexico are gone, many scientists say it's too early to declare a recovery. They suspect there could be hidden damage to the Gulf's marine life and marshes. And some of these scientists say research on the effects of the spill has been delayed or kept secret.

Among them is Michael Crosby, a senior scientist at Florida's Mote Marine Laboratory. The Gulf of Mexico is his baby. He was thrilled last year when BP promised to give scientists $500 million to research how the spill will affect marine life in the Gulf.

Eleven months later, he's still waiting to see the money.

"In a word," says Crosby, "it's stalled."

Last year, BP did give $50 million to several research groups in the Gulf. "But the rest of the money has been just caught up in a quagmire of bureaucracy, politics, turf issues," he says. "Why the hell isn't that money out there? We have lost a year, we have literally lost a year. That's a huge gap."

The first year after the spill was the best chance to track the oil and its effect on fish, shellfish, birds, and marshes ? the whole complex web of marine life. Crosby says more scientists need to be out in the Gulf right now.

"Listen to those men and women who work on the water," Crosby says. "They are seeing dazed crabs now that don't survive the transport, the massive miscarriages, fetuses, dead baby dolphins. Well, there's no hard-core data to make that link, and 10 years from now will they ever come back? Well, who knows?"

A Lengthy Process

Last year, BP and Gulf states set about appointing a board of scientists ? called the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Research Board ? to review research proposals and hand out the remaining $450 million. Crosby and other scientists believe the process got bogged down by politicians and officials from Gulf states trying to influence the membership of the board and allocation of the money.

Board director and biologist Rita Colwell told NPR that it wasn't politics setting the timetable for the process, but a desire to get the best scientists on the board.

Bill Walker, a resources manager for the state of Mississippi, says his governor did object when BP first appointed a 10-member board that didn't have what he felt was sufficient representation from Gulf scientific institutions. Subsequently, BP told the five Gulf states that each could appoint two scientists to raise the board membership to 20. But Walker says he doesn't think that was a major delay.

In any case, BP and Gulf states didn't sign a deal on the process for giving out the money until last month ? 10 months after BP announced it would create the research fund. The next step is to ask scientists to submit research proposals. Reviewing those could take months.

There is some money flowing to Gulf research. In addition to the $50 million BP has distributed to scientists, the federal government's National Science Foundation has also paid for Gulf expeditions. But Lisa Suatoni, a marine biologist with the environmental group Natural Resources Defense Council, says most of that work was about oil ? not marine life.

"What happened to the oil, what happened to the dispersants, what happened to the gases," she says, is what's been examined so far. "But the biologists and the ecologists haven't even laid out their puzzle pieces on the table yet, so there's no way of knowing what the environmental harm was. The answers are slipping through our fingers. It is a very depressing subplot to the oil spill."

Keeping Data Secret

There's one other big source of money for studying the health of the Gulf: the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. But the scientists who take NOAA money can't openly discuss or publish their conclusions yet. That's because the government is preparing legal action against BP under the Natural Resources Damage Assessment process.

Christopher D'Elia, a Gulf researcher at Louisiana State University, says the NRDA clamps a lid of secrecy on research that many scientists find stifling.

"It may end up in court," he says. "You just can't publish your data, you don't get involved in the normal kind of scientific discourse we had, so it's a more constraining process. I don't think it works. I think it's a nightmare. I think the whole thing, it just grinds everything to a halt."

But NOAA officials point out that without NRDA, evidence against BP and its drilling partners could be compromised if published before a trial. They add that the data they pay scientists to gather are published on NOAA's website; it's the scientists' "interpretation" of that data that is secret.

Eventually, that information will all be released and the world will know just what happened to the Gulf. But Don Bosch, a biologist with the University of Maryland who sat on the official oil spill investigative commission, says the damage from the spill is only a small part of what ails the Gulf. "Even in the worst case," he says, "the effects of this spill wouldn't be as devastating as the tremendous loss of coastal wetlands, you know, the large dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico, and all of those kinds of things."

Those assaults on the Gulf started long ago and are likely to continue long after the BP oil spill is just a statistic.

ESPN the Mag story tabs Lesnar as highest paid fighter at $5.3 million in 2010

In the major sports, stories about athletes' salaries generally draw derision and jealous reactions. In the case of mixed martial arts, fans probably have a more supportive stance for the fighters. The combatants aren't making a killing relative to athletes from the NFL, NBA and MLB yet they're putting their safety on the line.

According to ESPN the Magazine, the highest paid MMA fighter in 2010 was Lesnar at ONLY $5.3 million. Boxer Manny Pacquiao led the way in the other major combat sport at $32 million.

On the surface, that makes MMA look pathetic. Should MMA stars like Lesnar, Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva be making $15 million-plus a year? Maybe, but the argument from MMA promoters is that the gap between boxing's haves and have-nots is massive while MMA can boast of dozens of fighters making in excess of $500,000 per year.

The StarPhoenix's Dave Deibert points out that Lesnar is actually a bigger draw than 99.9 percent of the fighters in the modern history of combat sports:

Lesnar has recently become the biggest pay-per-view draw in the world. In 2010, he joined Mike Tyson as the only athletes to twice draw more than one million buys on pay-per-view in a single year ? Tyson did it three times in 1996.

Dwarf Hamsters - Four Species

There are four dwarf hamster species kept as pets. These animals are distinct from the different breeds of Syrian hamsters that are also kept as pets.

Animals that are given the name black bear hamster, Teddy bear hamster, long-haired hamster, hairless hamster, or panda bear hamster are all types of Syrian hamsters. The scientific name for these animals is Mesocricetus auratus.

The dwarf hamster species come from to separate genera. The first genus is Cricetulus and the second genus is Phodopus.

In the genus Cricetulus, we find this species Cricetulus Barabensis Griseus, often called the Chinese hamster or the Chinese dwarf hamster. The natural coloring of this hamster is called agouti. Close to the skin, the hairs are slate gray. On the animals belly, the tip of the hairs are off-white. On its back, the hairs fade from slate gray to brown, with a chestnut tinge.

In the second genus, Phodopus, there are three dwarf hamster species kept as pets: Phodopus campbelli, Phodopus sungorus, andPhodopus Roborovskii. Each of these species is distinct, although Phodopus campbelli and Phodopus sungorus are often confused.

Phodopus Roborovskii is the smallest of all the hamsters, measuring in at just about 5 cm (2 inches) in length. These animals have been given the nicknames Robos, Robbys, Robbies, and Rovsky's. One thing is for certain: these critters are the speed demons of the hamster world. Sometimes they move in quick, jerky movements, and sometimes they just seem to fly.

Because of their small size, you can definitely rule out housing them in a cage. They could probably fit through the bars any number of ways. Again, an aquarium would be the best house you can buy for them. And for this guy, the statement that "there's no such thing as too big a home" holds true more than ever. They need lots of space.

Although Phodopus campbelli and Phodopus sungorus are often confused for one another, in nature these two species never meet. Their natural habitats do not overlap.

Phodopus sungorus can be properly called the winter white hamster. This is because if the cycle of daylight is short enough, it will change its coat to white to blend in with the snow. In captivity, however, where artificial lights are apt to maintain constant cycles year-round, this pelage change is unlikely to happen.

Phodopus campbelli, on the other hand, will not change colors during the winter. It is preferable to keep females rather than males, because the males can run three times faster than the females. If you want to keep more than one, you need to put them together while they are young.

Males of this species are larger than females. And when viewed from above, the female's rump is rounder than the male's. The fur of this dwarf hamster is thick and wooly. Even their feet are furry.

Unfortunately, these two animals are interchangeably called Russian dwarf hamsters and Djungarian dwarf hamsters, making it impossible to distinguish between the two species. Therefore, it is recommended that you use their scientific names to refer to them.

(Founder Stories) How GroupMe Won SXSW: Grilled Cheese

At this year?s overcrowded and overhyped SXSW conference in Austin, one of the few startups to break through the noise was group text messaging app GroupMe. How did GroupMe win SXSW? Grilled cheese. The company rented an outdoor food shack for something like $10,000 and turned it into the GroupMe Grill with free grilled cheese sandwiches and beer. The grilled cheese, says co-founder Steve Martocci in this episode of Founder Stories, was ?an homage? to Phish concerts, where grilled cheese sandwiches are consumed in large quantities (watch the video above).

The GroupMe Grill became a meeting point for attendees of SXSW, and it was one of the places everyone was taking photos of on Instagram (one of the other ?winners? of SXSW). Jason Kincaid stopped by and did this video. All in all, two million text messages were sent through SXSW groups during the week of the event.

GroupMe wasn?t the only text messaging startup at SXSW. Beluga, Fast Society, Kik, Textplus, Yobongo, and many others were also there in full force. Does all this competition worry the GroupMe founders? In the video below, CEO Jared Hecht says, ?It lights a fire under our ass.? But the proliferation of all of these semi-private group texting apps says something about the ?broadcast overload? problem on more open social networks where ?conversations are sterile.?

Be sure to watch?Part I (on how GroupMe got started)?and Part II (on where group texting is going) of this GroupMe interview. You can also check out other?previous episodes?of?Founder Stories?or subscribe in?iTunes. (Disclosure: host Chris Dixon is an investor in GroupMe through Founder Collective).

2012 Will Be About Size of Government

Questions? Call us at 800-207-8001

"Political Connections" focuses on the intersection of politics and policy.

At a crossroads: How many government services will voters be willing to surrender?

It's always hazardous to predict the issues that will define the next presidential selection. But leading thinkers in both parties say that events of the past two weeks have locked in place a major part of the 2012 general-election contest.

The debate will revolve around a big question more often dodged than confronted: How much government are Americans willing to pay for? Before the conversation is over, the answer could produce uncomfortable moments for President Obama and Republicans alike, not to mention voters themselves.

The catalyst for this...

What to do with your old phone? | California Telephone Systems

Pay as you go mobiles have become very popular over the last few years due to their affordable cost. As they cost so little they are often changed for newer makes and models as soon as they are released. This unfortunately means that there is huge number of old mobiles sitting in homes all over the world.

There are millions of mobile users around the world, and a huge proportion of them change their phone on a regular basis. Pay monthly mobiles often cost more; however, they are still changed on average every 18 months making this a huge problem. Although it is always an idea to keep one back up pay as you go phone in case of emergencies.

You would be amazed how many mobile phones and chargers are simply lying around. There are several different companies that can help with the problem of what to do with your old handset. Not only will you be helping the environment by recycling your old phone, but you may also be able to get some money for it. Often people have handsets for a very short space of time meaning that it is still in great condition. There is no reason for mobile to not be worth something, and any amount of money is better than it gathering dust. The companies that offer a recycling service have your best interests in mind, and will offer you a competitive price for the phones.

You are under no obligation to sell your old handset to them, and you can get a free quote for the value. Once you are happy with the price they have offered you simply need to send the phone to them, and wait for your money. It is a very simple way to de-clutter your home, and ensure that you are participating in keeping the planet environmentally friendly.

They will often pay for damaged and older mobiles, which is fantastic. Many of the mobile phones will be serviced, and resold to developing countries ensuring that they are fully recycled. If telephone is beyond repair it will be sent to a recycling plant to ensure that it is disposed of correctly.

If the handset is a very old model you may not get any money for it, however, you should be happy that it is being recycled in the best way. Often you can choose to recycle telephone no matter what age it is, and the company will donate an amount to your chosen charity. Before handing your mobile over you may want to ensure that all data has been removed.

It is worrying how much private and sensitive information we all store on our devices. No matter what way you choose to dispose of your mobile, you will feel better knowing that you did the right thing. The world would be a better place if everyone was more aware of how to recycle household items in the correct way.

Get more information on mobiles or mobile contracts on the Virgin Mobile website.

Nissan Leaf Nismo RC all-electric race car eyes-on

Nissan Leaf Nismo RC all-electric race car eyes-on
When Nissan announced the Leaf RC we, naturally, were expecting a little radio controlled version of the battery-electric sedan that's making its way to driveways now -- slowly. We certainly didn't expect a race version of the thing, but that's what Nissan created, and now here it is at the New York International Auto Show, sitting on a turntable and spinning away. In fact you could envision that spinning stretching it out. It's rather... longer than the stock Leaf. In fact, it really looks nothing at all like the stock car, but if it did it'd be all the more strange on the track than this long, low, spread-out, carbon fiber wedge. They are at least both pure electrics and both painted blue, though under the cerulean lights here just about everything is looking decidedly cool. Okay, so 107HP, a top speed of 93MPH, and a maximum duration of just 20 minutes on the track will hardly see this winning any WTCC races, but with a weight of just 2,068 pounds (some 700 less than a Tesla Roadster) we'd certainly take one for a spin -- even if it were a short one.

Razer Hydra gaming-grade motion sensing controller ? Coolest Gadgets

by Edwin - on April 22nd, 2011

When Razer called their Hydra a ?gaming-grade motion sensing controller?, it left us wondering ? isn?t the Wiimote the first gaming grade motion sensing controller? Of course, upon reading the fine print (and being more careful with our eyes), we realized that the Razer Hydra is slightly different from other gaming-grade motion sensing controllers because it is powered by Sixense and has been specially built to draw you deeper into your library of PC games.

Razer has made sure that they worked closely with Valve and Sixense in order to churn out exclusive Portal 2 content so that they can showcase the power of the Razer Hydra in making you feel as though you were really part of the game environment. Before we continue, it must be said that Portal 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to 2007?s game of the year, and the full version of the game including exclusive Portal 2 content can be yours ? if you decide to pick up a special edition bundle with the Razer Hydra.

Now, the Hydra in folklore is a creature that has many heads ? cut off one and another two will regenerate in its place. Good thing you don?t have to grapple with so many heads on this gaming peripheral, but on the other hand if it breaks, you can ?regenerate? it by purchasing a new one.

To put it in a nutshell, the Razer Hydra will allow you to extend your natural body motion directly into your PC games. Portal 2 would be the perfect platform to make sure this happens ? letting you intuitively reach out, interact with physics puzzles, shoot portals and leap across wide chasms in a complete 3D environment. Of course, you will realize that Razer?s trademark ultra-low latency and highly precise one-to-one tracking to the exact millimeter and degree is also thrown into the mix, hence maximizing your portal testing immersion experience.

Optimized with more than 125 popular PC games out of the box, you can be sure that the Razer Hydra is going to be worth looking into if you?re serious about gaming and want to move beyond the standard mouse and keyboard combo. The question is, would casual gamers be willing to spend $139.99 on this, or use that money for more useless in-game merchandise?

On Guitar Studying Systems and Electric Guitar Theory | arts ...

The guitar is among the oldest instruments which have been within the musical scene for a long time. For individuals who have curiosity about guitar understanding guidelines, you?ll find plenty of methods that have been documented by former students as well as recognized guitar players that may help new individuals to perfect the art.

Just as any other hobby or game, you?ll find different approaches via which one can learn the best way to play this instrument based on every person. Diverse styles could give great results for different men and women. The option of instrument is among the most important points that one cannot manage to ignore. Adjusting poor top quality instruments could prove a greater challenge than you?ll be able to ever imagine. This indicates that learning the way to play on a poor instrument can hinder your efforts a great deal.

The versions of guitars are several and each and every total band has far more than one guitar to total the band. It is thus critical to choose what kind of guitar you want to learn to play. You will find bass, rhythms, lead and solo guitars and all have their tricks. At the early stages of learning the way to play, it is crucial and better to stay with one type of guitar and practice it to perfection before discovering one more to prevent confusion.

Let us assume we have by now selected the best instrument feasible for our exercise sessions, it?s high time we started deteriorating our learning classes into smaller and simply manageable units. Initial tip will be the alternate picking tip where the player is taught how you can pick alternate strokes instead of playing the strings in their systematic rows. This method will probably be very valuable when playing your instrument quickly. The player frequently gets tired specially within the fingers and this style will aid maintain your fingers stroking for longer.

While working on the alternate picking tactics it really is similarly advisable to work on the press as this assists the learner in becoming able to recognize the beat. By creating a keen ear to the beat, 1 is able to keep in key anytime they play the instrument. This need to be really valuable particularly when you begin playing in bands where you are going to be forced to play in situations where there are numerous other instruments playing at the identical time.

Some men and women are fond of strumming away at the strings instruments even though others prefer to pick every string each time. Well, this is about desire and possibly the kind of music they?re playing might also influence the style of playing at any given time. According to specialists, picking helps the guitarist to master greater the beat and play better tunes.

The ears play a really vital role within the music sector, for one to be able to realize music; they should have ears and have the ability to hear. Training the ears to hear the times when any tune is playing is amongst the very first and most crucial areas of understanding the way to play any musical instrument, it?s only by means of this that 1 might be able to depict the difference between notes, scales, the key and any other notations that distinguish the tones that people hear in music.

Queen Elizabeth, II Gives Her Official Consent For The Royal Marriage Of Prince William

Queen Elizabeth, II Gives Her Official Consent For The Royal Marriage Of Prince William

Signed, Sealed, Delivered

We are now just one week away from the Royal Wedding of Prince William of Wales to his ladylove Kate Middleton and today we learn that his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, II ? the ruling monarch of the United Kingdom, has formally given her consent for the prince to marry his fianc?e. Because of the nature of royal protocol, the Queen must formally give her stamp of approval for the royal wedding to take place ? so in a very official way, Queen Elizabeth signed a fancy document ?in her own hand? so that the Royal Wedding can take place next weekend. Check out photos of this fancy document below.

The Queen?s historic formal consent to Prince William?s forthcoming marriage to Kate Middleton was unveiled today. Under the Great Seal of the Realm, she signed an elaborate notice of approval which proclaimed, in transcribed calligraphy, consent to the union of ?Our Most Dearly Beloved Grandson Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales, K.G. and Our Trusty and Well-beloved Catherine Elizabeth Middleton?. Tied to the bottom of the approval by gold braiding is a large red wax Great Seal of the Realm. William had to ask his grandmother?s consent to marry because of a law dating from the 18th century. Under the Royal Marriages Act 1772, all descendants of George II must obtain the sovereign?s agreement before they wed, otherwise the marriage is invalid. The ?Instrument of Consent? features decorative artwork chosen by the artist to represent the groom and bride-to-be. There is a gold cipher of the couple?s entwined initials beneath the prince?s coronet, but St James?s Palace said this was not the couple?s official symbol. A white lily represents St Catherine of Siena, whose feast day falls on April 29th and with whom Miss Middleton shares her name. Beneath it is a Welsh leek surrounded by William?s white three-pronged second in line to the throne label and a tiny red escallop from the Spencer family Arms. There is also a red dragon ? the heraldic symbol of Wales, the UK?s floral emblems ? the rose, thistle and shamrock ? and the Garter belt, William?s blue and gold Order of the Garter belt, as well as a large gold E for Elizabeth. The Queen?s signature ?Elizabeth R? can be seen at the top right of the Instrument of Consent, which is dated ?the ninth day of February Two Thousand and Eleven in the Sixtieth year of Our Reign?. It was signed ?by the Queen herself, signed with her own hand? at a Privy Council meeting after the monarch made a formal Declaration of Consent. It reads: ?NOW KNOW YE that We have consented and do by these Presents signify Our Consent to the contracting of Matrimony between Our Most Dearly Beloved Grandson Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales K.G. and Our Trusty and Well-beloved Catherine Elizabeth Middleton.?

OMG ? this is SO cool! While some are getting annoyed with the attention being given to this Royal Wedding, I am eating up every bit of info that we get. This document is straight out of fairytales, complete with the red seal and everything. I know it must seem really silly to many people in this modern age for such pomp and circumstance to surround something as simple as a wedding but I think it?s totally cool. Prince William?s wedding to Kate next week is going to be a huge spectacle ? one that I can?t wait to bear witness to. We are in the home stretch now ? very soon we?ll be toasting and celebrating their royal highnesses MR. and MRS. Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales :)
