As a result, most people seek loans to finance home purchases, and to make needed repairs or improvements. To secure financing for home improvement projects, the house itself may provide equity value to secure a loan or second mortgage. However, for borrowers who don?t want to tap into their equity, some lending institutions offer alternatives for home improvement financing. In addition to options like second-mortgages or home-equity lines of credit, KeyBank (NYSE: KEY) of Vermont allows qualified borrowers to acquire unsecured loans for needed repairs or improvements, said Brigitte Ritchie, director of community relations. ?The maximum [loan] amount available depends on the person?s personal credit,? Ritchie said. ?But, it?s a great way to finance repairs or improvements for people who don?t want to tap into the equity in their home.? Interest rates for unsecured loans for home improvement may be higher than those for home equity or secured lines of credit, said Ritchie, but they are often lower than credit card rates. And, while home equity loans and lines of credit may be used for things not related to the home, funds from an unsecured home improvement loan must go into the home. Philip Smith, KeyBank?s senior vice president of community banking in Vermont, said the prospect of borrowing without using equity in the home is attractive to consumers, but it may not be the best option for all homeowners, based on their personal financial profile. ?The people on my team have been trained to have a broad conversation about a borrower?s financial profile, and not rush into one type of loan or another,? Smith said. ?It really comes down to the individual?s situation.? Sometimes, consolidating debt from credit cards or other types of loans is the best option, he said, with a low-interest secured loan providing an affordable alternative. The bank analyzes the situation, looks at fixed loans versus a line of credit, and prepares a recommendation on the best product for the individual person, added Ritchie. Unsecured loans require broad documentation of the borrower?s income and debt profile, so consumers should be prepared to provide data including several years of tax returns, a balance sheet on income and financial obligations, and assets and liabilities, said Ritchie and Smith. For the self-employed or business owner, additional information on the business will be required. ?The most important advice I can give is to sit with your banker, describe the particulars of your situation, your financial status, and your project plans,? Smith said. ?Have that larger, holistic conversation about where you are and where you want to be.? For moderate- and lower-income homeowners, financing options may be available through NeighborWorks Alliance of Vermont, which has home ownership centers in St. Albans, Burlington, Barre, Lyndonville, West Rutland, Springfield, and Brattleboro. The Green Mountain Loan Fund, which offers rehabilitation and repair loans through the Central Vermont Community Land Trust (CVCLT), is associated with the NeighborWorks Alliance center in Barre, which serves Washington, Lamoille, and Orange counties. The home ownership center provides extensive services to moderate- and low-income homeowners, including debt counseling and project financing, Dupuis noted. The agency also offers a home repair and rehabilitation program that sends a rehabilitation specialist out to the home, at no cost to the homeowner, to write job specifications for things like roof repair, structural repairs, heating and electrical system repair, and weatherization. The specialist remains available to help with choosing a contractor and supervising the work during the course of the project. Program eligibility is determined by a borrower?s income level and the number of people in the home, among other factors, said Patti Dupuis, loan-fund manager for the Green Mountain Loan Fund. ?It?s a great program,? Dupuis said. ?Our specialist inspects the home and finds things that need to be upgraded to make the home healthy and safe, [and] comes back and provides us with a scope of work and the costs.? A variety of loan arrangements can be made, said Dupuis, including a zero-percent deferred-payment option for some borrowers, said Dupuis; the loan doesn?t have to be repaid until the home is sold or the title transferred to a new owner, though a borrower can begin to pay back the loan sooner, if preferred. Chandra Pollard, director of the home ownership program at the CVCLT, said the Healthy Homes Program provides grants to eligible low- or moderate-income homeowners for things like lead paint abatement, as well. Slow earthquakes: It's all in the rock mechanics

May 20, 2013 ? Earthquakes that last minutes rather than seconds are a relatively recent discovery, according to an international team of seismologists. Researchers have been aware of these slow earthquakes, only for the past five to 10 years because of new tools and new observations, but these tools may explain the triggering of some normal earthquakes and could help in earthquake prediction.

"New technology has shown us that faults do not just fail in a sudden earthquake or by stable creep," said Demian M. Saffer, professor of geoscience, Penn State. "We now know that earthquakes with anomalous low frequencies -- slow earthquakes -- and slow slip events that take weeks to occur exist."

These new observations have put a big wrinkle into our thinking about how faults work, according to the researchers who also include Chris Marone, professor of geosciences, Penn State; Matt J. Ikari, recent Ph.D. recipient, and Achim J. Kopf, former Penn State postdoctural fellow, both now at the University of Bremen, Germany. So far, no one has explained the processes that cause slow earthquakes.

The researchers thought that the behavior had to be related to the type of rock in the fault, believing that clay minerals are important in this slip behavior to see how the rocks reacted. Ikari performed laboratory experiments using natural samples from drilling done offshore of Japan in a place where slow earthquakes occur. The samples came from the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, an international collaborative. The researchers reported their results recently in Nature Geoscience.

These samples are made up of ocean sediment that is mostly clay with a little quartz.

"Usually, when you shear clay-rich fault rocks in the laboratory in the way rocks are sheared in a fault, as the speed increases, the rocks become stronger and self arrests the movement," said Saffer. "Matt noticed another behavior. Initially the rocks reacted as expected, but these clays got weaker as they slid further. They initially became slightly stronger as the slip rate increased, but then, over the long run, they became weaker."

The laboratory experiments that produced the largest effect closely matched the velocity at which slow earthquakes occur in nature. The researchers also found that water content in the clays influenced how the shear occurred.

"From the physics of earthquake nucleation based on the laboratory experiments we would predict the size of the patch of fault that breaks at tens of meters," said Saffer. "The consistent result for the rates of slip and the velocity of slip in the lab are interesting. Lots of things point in the direction for this to be the solution."

The researchers worry about slow earthquakes because there is evidence that swarms of low frequency events can trigger large earthquake events. In Japan, a combination of broadband seismometers and global positioning system devices can monitor slow earthquakes.

For the Japanese and others in earthquake prone areas, a few days of foreknowledge of a potential earthquake hazard could be valuable and save lives.

For slow slip events, collecting natural samples for laboratory experiments is more difficult because the faults where these take place are very deep. Only off the north shore of New Zealand is there a fault that can be sampled. Saffer is currently working to arrange a drilling expedition to that fault.

AAA Mich.: Gas prices rise 10 cents over past week

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) -- AAA Michigan says gasoline prices have risen about 10 cents during the past week to a statewide average of about $3.88 per gallon.

The auto club says Monday the average is about 13 cents per gallon more than last year at this time.

Of the cities it surveys, AAA Michigan says the cheapest price for self-serve unleaded fuel is in the Saginaw and Bay City areas, where it's about $3.83 a gallon. The highest average is in the Marquette area at about $3.95.

Dearborn-based AAA Michigan surveys 2,800 Michigan gas stations daily. The auto club's weekly Fuel Gauge report typically is released on Mondays. Due to next week's Memorial Day holiday, AAA says the next report is expected to be released on May 28.

Jenn Horton: Every Mom Deserves Your Nod

When I had my first child five years ago, I got what I like to call "mom nods" by the dozens. You know, those simple little gestures of encouragement based on pure recognition of a similar human experience. In those first few harried months with a newborn, the supportive looks and smiles came a plenty, and, I'm convinced, were critical to my survival as a newbie.

The early months have grown a bit fuzzy, but I do especially recall a few moms with older kids nodding with sincere empathy. They weren't still trying to carry 50 pounds of baby equipment in and out of the trunk of the car along with the groceries, and oh yeah, the baby. But those moms knew. They remembered, and made a compassionate effort, to show me solidarity. There was nothing better than walking down the airplane aisle with our car seat, fearful of the unwelcoming passenger stares as we approached our seats and seeing just one perfectly-timed nod and smile. Those two flight legs to visit the in-laws in Trinidad were intimidating enough. That extra You Got This, Mama made a huge impact on my sanity and faith in my own survival skills.

Something happens as we build up our parenting sea legs, though. We've hit our stride, we're busier than we ever deemed humanly possible, and who has time to look up? Then, when we do stop and assess, we don't always like what we see. We shudder at the chaos and wonder why we haven't mastered it yet. We look up for that one free second, but often, the nodder and the noddee have become two passing minivans in the daylight that miss their bonding moment because oh-crap-Johnny-just-dropped-applesauce-all-over-the-booster-seat and shoot-my-iPhone-lost-charge-in-the-middle-of-a-call-with-the-principal.

One lesson rings loudest to me in my short, five years of parenthood: Just when we think we have it all down, we're thrown out of whack, off track, our bearings all across the road. Going back to work after a baby. Epic toddler tantrums. Mean girls in middle school. Puberty. An empty nest. And that's just every-parent stuff, before life's darker challenges even enter the drama. It's those days, weeks or longer where we haven't quite mastered the nuances of the new, when sisterly sympathy might just help us hold on and hold up. I want to up those numbers of simple gestures of support well beyond the stroller years. Who's with me?

There's one rule: It does not matter if we don't share the same mom genetic makeup; we can all share supporting nods. The Still-Breastfeeding a Toddler, All-Organic-All-The-Time Feeding, Free-Ranging, Crunchy-Granola Mom and the Helicoptering, Leaning-Into That Corporate Ladder, Tiger-Parenting, Mom-on-a-Mish-to-Have-it-All, Wonder Woman all get the same level of attention. Whether you are one of these moms, all of these moms or like me, you take bits and pieces from the gazillion parenting philosophies to find what fits on any given Sunday, let's nod our heads to all of our warrior mom beats. Whatever hats we wear, similar or different in size, shade and material, they all hold similar parenting challenges. I know it's when I don't carry the same mom label as the next and have never been there/done that, that I must remember most: Behind it all, whatever our lifestyles, there is love. We lean in, we lean back, we hang on for the sake of a happy family. We are the same, because we are moms. And some days, that is freaking hard. Nod, nod, nod.

So, Moms of the World: Look up. Hey, girl! There we are again, looking back at you, nodding, smiling. You're in the thick of it, or it's just a thick day, and we get it.

And we got you.

Kerry travels to Middle East: Will 'face time' help Syria?

Secretary of State John Kerry will visit Oman and Jordan in hopes that in-person meetings can rally support for peace talks in Syria, despite uncertain support from Russia.

Kerry left Washington on Monday for Oman where he will have discussions with the sultan of the Gulf state. He will then travel on to Jordan to gather with 10 of America's closest European and Arab partners to discuss how to advance a political transition and end more than two years of bloodshed in Syria, before traveling on to Israel.

For the Syria negotiations to succeed, the Obama administration is banking on Russia's help.

The U.S. and Russia have wrangled repeatedly while more than 70,000 Syrians have died, but they now say they're working together to start direct talks between Syria's government and the opposition in Geneva next month. Washington demands Assad's ouster, while Russia continues to provide the Syrian leader with military aid and diplomatic cover, but President Barack Obama this week said the meeting "may yield results."

The optimism echoes the message of Kerry, who during his Moscow visit earlier this month declared that the old Cold War foes, by rejuvenating Syrian peace hopes, were demonstrating how they "can accomplish great things together when the world needs it."

For all the heady talk of cooperation, however, Russia has continued to rebuff American demands that it cut off military support for Assad.

Moscow is preparing to give Syria state-of-the-art ground-to-air missile systems, Israeli officials say. It is beefing up its naval presence near its base in northwestern Syria, reports suggest. And, in the latest revelation, U.S. officials say Russia has provided the Assad regime with anti-ship cruise missiles.

Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the transfer of the advanced anti-ship missiles is "an unfortunate decision that will embolden the regime and prolong the suffering."

On the diplomatic front, the situation isn't much better. There, Russia has repeatedly blocked a proposal for an expanded Security Council trip to Turkey and Lebanon to study Syria's refugee crisis, according to U.N. diplomats.

The continued friction between Moscow on the one hand and Washington and its partners on the other comes as the Obama administration is evaluating a range of options, including military ones, to break the stalemate in Syria's civil war and respond to evidence that Assad's forces used small amounts of chemical weapons in two attacks in March. Obama previously declared chemical weapons use his "red line" for a more forceful American intervention, though Kerry and other U.S. officials have since suggested that no such step would be taken while the new peace push still has hope.

Russia's missiles support significantly boosts Syria's capability to target manned planes, drones and incoming missiles after its systems were easily circumvented in 2007 when Israeli jets bombed a suspected nuclear reactor site along the Euphrates River in northeastern Syria. Apparently successful Israeli strikes in recent weeks on weapons convoys to Hezbollah show the Syrian defenses are still far from impregnable, but the new weaponry adds further considerations as the United States tries to change Assad's calculation that he can prevail in Syria's civil war.

While more and better anti-missile systems wouldn't immediately change the fight between Syria's government and armed opposition, they would make it more dangerous for the U.S. and other governments to try to enforce a no-fly zone in the country or otherwise intervening militarily. And with Washington mulling over the options, the war continues. The refugee toll has topped 1.5 million people and much of the country has slipped into lawlessness.

Kerry's weeklong trip will also see him try to advance his two-month effort to restart peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

The secretary has persuaded the Arab world to help by sweetening its deal of universal recognition for the Jewish state if it pulls out of most of the territory in east Jerusalem and the West Bank that it conquered in the 1967 Mideast war. But he has struggled to gain any public concession from Israel, which was accused of taking steps last week to legalize four unauthorized settlement outposts in the West Bank. The Palestinians see that land as part of its future state.

Kerry also will travel to Ethiopia to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity, the precursor to today's African Union. While in Addis Ababa, Kerry plans a separate one-on-one meeting with Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, officials said.

In Oman, Kerry will talk with officials about their plans to purchase a $2.1 billion air defense system from American manufacturer Raytheon.

Suicide bomber kills 14 at Afghan province council

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A suicide bomber struck outside a provincial council headquarters in northern Afghanistan on Monday, killing the council chief and at least 13 others, authorities said. The Taliban insurgency quickly claimed responsibility.

Seeking to weaken the Afghan government, Taliban insurgents have been carrying out attacks and assassinations intended to intimidate both officials and civilians ahead of next year's withdrawal of most international troops.

Baghlan provincial council leader Mohammad Rasoul Mohseni was entering the compound in the morning when the bomber ran up on foot and detonated his explosives in the provincial capital of Pul-e-Khumri, said Baghlan chief of police Asadullah Sherzad.

He said 14 people were killed, including Mohseni, and 11 were wounded.

Mohammad Zahier Ghanizada, a member of parliament from Baghlan, confirmed the council chief's death and added that Mohseni had previously received multiple death threats.

Also killed in the attack were six police bodyguards and seven civilians, Sherzad said.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed in a text message to journalists that an insurgent operative carried out the targeted bombing.

"Today at 11 a.m. in front of the Baghlan provincial council office, we have carried out a suicide attack and killed the head of the council," it said.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the bombing Monday.

"Such attacks are against all human rights and the principles of Islam," Karzai said in a statement. "Perpetrators of such attacks are enemies of the Afghan nation and the puppets of foreigners."

Karzai left later Monday for a two-day state visit to India, where he is expected to request military aid.

Both Karzai and the U.S. have sought peace talks with the Taliban and other insurgent factions in preparation for most foreign troops leaving next year after more than 12 years of war, but the efforts have borne little fruit. The Taliban seek to re-establish the strict interpretation of Islamic law they imposed for five years before being ousted in the 2001 U.S.-led invasion over its sheltering of al-Qaida's terrorist leadership.

The insurgents last month launched a fierce new spring offensive that has in the past week alone seen the police chief of Farah province gunned down outside his home and twin bombings that killed nine people in an elite gated community for government officials and business owners outside of the southern city of Kandahar. Two bombs also exploded outside the provincial governor's office in Nangarhar province last week, killing one police guard.

Insurgents have also targeted members of the international coalition. A roadside bomb killed four American soldiers last week in the country's south, while another insurgent faction, Hizb-e-Islami, targeted a coalition convoy in the capital of Kabul two days later, killing two U.S. soldiers and four American contractors who were training Afghan troops to take over security.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) ? Tens of thousands of commuters are bracing for a difficult trip around southwest Connecticut and to New York City beginning Monday as workers repair the Metro-North commuter rail line crippled by a derailment and crash.

Crews will spend days rebuilding 2,000 feet of track, overhead wires and signals following the collision between two trains Friday evening that injured 72 people, Metro-North President Howard Permut said Sunday. Nine remained hospitalized.

"This amounts to the wholesale reconstruction of a two-track electrified railroad," he said.

Several days of around-the-clock work will be required, including inspections and testing of the newly rebuilt system, Permut said. The damaged rail cars were removed from the tracks on Sunday, the first step toward making the repairs.

Service disruptions on the New Haven line between South Norwalk and New Haven are expected to continue "well into the coming week," Permut said.

Each day, approximately 30,000 Metro-North customers use the stations where service has been shut down, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates Metro-North.

Amtrak service between New York and New Haven also was suspended, and there was no estimate on service restoration. Limited service was available between New Haven and Boston.

Jim Cameron, chairman of a commuter group, the Connecticut Rail Commuter Council, said he's asked officials in numerous towns to suspend parking rules to accommodate what could be tens of thousands of motorists driving to unaffected train stations. Twelve stations are on the route that's been shut down.

The state Department of Transportation was expected to provide details Sunday on bus service between stations on Monday. Cameron said he doubts many commuters will use three modes of transportation to get to work: driving their cars to catch a bus to get to a train station for the final leg.

Commuters will more likely rely on their cars, leading to massive traffic problems on highways that are already clogged on normal days, Cameron said. He suggested that local and regional officials post highway signs directing motorists to available parking so motorists "don't get off the highway and drive in circles looking for where to dump their cars."

About 700 people were on board the trains Friday evening when one heading east from New York City's Grand Central Terminal to New Haven derailed just outside Bridgeport. It was hit by a train heading west from New Haven.

Dan Solomon, a trauma surgeon who lives in Westport and was headed to work at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, was on the train that derailed. He said he treated several injured passengers, including a woman with severely broken ankles.

He said he was in a front car that was not as badly affected as cars in the rear of the train.

"I hardly lost my iced tea," Solomon said in an interview.

He said walls were torn off both trains and he quickly checked injured passengers to separate the most badly injured from others.

"When the EMS arrived, I was covered in everyone's blood," he said.

Investigators are looking at a broken section of rail to see if it is connected to the derailment and collision.

NTSB investigators arrived Saturday and are expected to be on site for seven to 10 days. They will look at the brakes and performance of the trains, the condition of the tracks, crew performance and train signal information, among other things.

The MTA operates the Metro-North Railroad, the second-largest commuter railroad in the nation. The Metro-North main lines ? the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven ? run northward from New York City's Grand Central Terminal into suburban New York and Connecticut.

The last significant train collision involving Metro-North occurred in 1988 when a train engineer was killed in Mount Vernon, N.Y., when one train empty of passengers rear-ended another, railroad officials said.

Though the NFL has not seen a player die from on-field injuries in decades (Korey Stringer died in 2001 from heat exhaustion), tragedy often strikes at the lower levels of this sport.

It happened recently in Farmerville, Louisiana, to 17-year-old Jaleel Gipson (pictured).? A fullback, Gipson died after fracturing a vertebrate during ?Oklahoma drills? at Farmerville High School?s spring practices.? He was on life support for several days.

According to KNOE-TV, Bengals offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth has donated to the family the cost of Gipson?s funeral.? It?s a great gesture, and news of Whitworth?s generosity brought the story to our attention.

Now that we?re here, and speaking primarily as the father of a soon-to-be-17-year-old football player, why in the hell are high school kids doing Oklahoma drills in May, or ever?

The NFL stubbornly believes its rules will trickle down to the lower levels of the sport.? If so, the removal of contact from offseason workouts is trickling from Park Avenue to the Bayou at the rate of partially-frozen molasses.

Jaleel?s coach calls the incident an ?unlucky event,? which Jaleel?s family surely? would consider to be the biggest understatement of human history.? The health of our children shouldn?t be left to chance, not when the risk is avoidable.? While we realize that many frustrated, over-the-hill athletes regard high-school sports as having the same significance as the pro game, youth sports are played with children, not adults.

While the excessive zeal of some can undermine the good intentions of the many, it seems like every community has more than a few coaches whose obsession with winning clouds their judgment.? Or, in many cases, supplants it.

Try to remember that your players are our children.? They?re not your tickets to the glory days that have long since passed you by.? They?re our children.

Jaleel Gipson should be alive, and now his family has to deal for the rest of their lives with the fact that he isn?t.? While it?s very good and kind that Andrew Whitworth will pay for Jaleel?s funeral, this situation needs to spark a broader discussion in every school district about putting the same limits on offseason practices that the NFL has instituted.

That won?t bring Jaleel back, but it could protect other kids from suffering a similar fate.

ATLANTA (AP) ? President Barack Obama is telling graduates of Morehouse College to take the power of their example ? as black men graduating from college ? and use it to improve people's lives.

He's asking those headed to law school to think about defending the poor, and those destined for medical school to consider treating people in communities without access to health care.

And he asked those with MBAs in their near future to think about how to put people to work or turn around a struggling neighborhood.

The president said graduates should inspire those who look up to them.

About 500 students were receiving undergraduate degrees from the historically black, all-male institution in Atlanta, becoming "Morehouse Men."

After the speech, Obama was to attend a Democratic Senate fundraiser, also in Atlanta.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Carmelo Anthony made two jumpers to open the game, knowing it wouldn't stay that easy.

The defenses in this series are too good, so the difference is something else.

"It's just a matter of who wants it more," Anthony said.

On Thursday night, that was the Knicks.

Anthony scored 28 points and New York avoided elimination in the Eastern Conference semifinals with an 85-75 victory over Indiana in Game 5.

Reserves J.R. Smith and Chris Copeland each had 13 points for the Knicks, who trail 3-2 and will need a victory Saturday in Indiana to force a seventh game back here Monday. They are trying to become the ninth NBA team to overcome a 3-1 deficit to win a series.

"I was totally impressed because we met the challenge," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. "I think as a coach you come into games like this and you want to see who's going to step up and make plays, and I thought we did that tonight. We were the better team in terms of doing that."

Anthony, who didn't make a basket in the fourth quarter of either game in Indiana, made a jumper midway through the fourth quarter after Indiana closed within four points. He followed with two free throws, Raymond Felton made a layup, and the Knicks were never in jeopardy again.

Paul George had 23 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Pacers. They played without point guard George Hill because of a concussion and committed 19 turnovers.

"We've just got to play more solid. There's no other way to put it," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said.

George battled foul trouble and couldn't contain Anthony quite as well as he had while the Pacers easily won the previous two games.

Anthony made his first two shots as New York raced to a 7-0 lead in a game in which it never trailed. He finished only 12 of 28, but got plenty of bench help.

"We didn't shoot the ball very well, but we made shots at the crucial time," Anthony said.

David West had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Pacers, who were trying to reach the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2004.

"We didn't play well. It was a bad game for us and we were still there," George said.

The winner will face the defending NBA champion Miami Heat in a series that will start Wednesday.

New York didn't really shake its scoring slump, shooting only 41 percent from the field, but put together a few runs during the game to open just enough space against a Pacers team that shot 36 percent and was a dismal 19 of 33 at the free throw line.

Vogel said Hill was hurt after a collision with Knicks center Tyson Chandler during the first half of Indiana's 93-82 victory on Tuesday. The Knicks finally opened it up midway through the third quarter with a 12-4 run, started by Smith's bank shot and featuring a 3-pointer and follow shot from Copeland, who got more playing time while Woodson gave little to veterans Amare Stoudemire and the slumping Jason Kidd, who missed his only shot and remains scoreless in the series.

"Coaching is a feel. It's not always what players want at the end of the day, it's about winning," Woodson said. "That's all I'm in it for."

Anthony made a jumper and a 3-pointer on his first two shots, and Iman Shumpert followed with another jumper for a 7-0 start. Smith got a big ovation when he checked in, which grew much louder when he made his first shot, dribbling back behind the arc for a 3-pointer that made it 17-12 with 2:56 left in the opening quarter.

Smith has endured a miserable stretch since elbowing Boston's Jason Terry in the fourth quarter of Game 3 in the first round. The Pacers chipped away for most of the half, but couldn't take the lead in part because of their sloppy free throw shooting, going 8 of 16 in the half that agonizingly wouldn't end when both Chandler and the Pacers' Sam Young committed fouls more than 30 feet from the basket in the final 2.4 seconds.

Soul singer Candice Glover wins "American Idol"

(Reuters) - Candice Glover, a soul singer from rural South Carolina, was named "American Idol" on Thursday and become the first female singer to win the television singing competition since 2007.

Glover, 23, defeated country singer Kree Harrison in the popular vote with her powerful voice in what judges deemed a close contest to take the title on season 12 of the popular Fox network show.

"You are officially our American idol," host Ryan Seacrest said as the crowd of 7,000 in Los Angeles cheered. "Three years, persistence, determination and a lot of talent. You deserve it."

It was third time lucky for Glover, who appeared in two earlier seasons of the show, and finally won the crown by making songs like "Somewhere" from the musical "West Side Story," and the jazz tune "You've Changed" all her own.

"Oh, my God," a shocked Glover said with tears streaming down her face after hearing Securest call her name. "Three years."

Seacrest announced Glover as the winner at the end of the two-hour finale show, which featured performances by judges Keith Urban and Mariah Carey, as well as Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Lopez, rapper Pitbull and South Korea's Psy, who sang his new single "Gentleman."

Glover, the first woman to be crowned "Idol" since Jordin Sparks six years ago, won a record deal, which could help propel her to the stardom enjoyed by other women "Idol" winners such as Grammy Award winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

9,000-acre wildfire in NW Wisconsin contained

TOWN OF GORDON, Wis. (AP) ? Firefighters battling a 9,000-acre in northwestern Wisconsin have contained the massive blaze.

Department of Natural Resources spokesman Robert Manwell said Thursday the fire in Douglas and Bayfield counties is 100 percent contained. Manwell says fire crews will be handling small brush fires and reworking the lines that contain the wildfire.

Authorities opened all roads in the area overnight and some residents headed back to their homes. The fire, which began Tuesday, destroyed 17 homes and 30 other structures. The DNR says no one has been hurt in the largest forest fire to hit northern Wisconsin in 33 years.

Gov. Scott Walker has declared a state of emergency in Douglas and Bayfield counties, which makes the Wisconsin National Guard available for recovery efforts. The governor plans to tour the area Thursday.

Unlikely Big 3 has Memphis in 1st Western finals

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) ? The Miami Heat have LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. The Spurs have dominated for years with the trio of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili.

Now the Memphis Grizzlies, who traded their leading scorer in January, have surged into their first Western Conference finals behind a very unlikely Big Three of their own.

Marc Gasol still is Pau's little brother to some. Memphis thought about trading guard Mike Conley, the son of a track star, early in his career. And Memphis is Zach Randolph's fourth NBA team.

Conley said Friday the three all worked harder after Rudy Gay was traded, knowing they had to step up to get to where they wanted.

The Grizzlies play the Spurs in Game 1 on Sunday in San Antonio.
