In Flex We Trust ? Tech Talk Gaming: Gamer Shatters Jimmy ...

Back in 2010, late-night host Jimmy Fallon set a world record for ?Most Video Game Consoles Played in One Minute,? as measured by the RecordSetter Book of World Records. That?s nine different consoles in 60 seconds ? ranging from the Super Nintendo, to the Dreamcast, to the fabled Atari 2600.

@Yungjohnnybravo @TatWZA

But we all know the saying, and an intrepid Ohio gamer named Ryan Sullivan has done just that: Broken Fallon?s record with a whopping?13 different consoles played?in under a minute.

Let?s get serious for a moment: You?re probably thinking the same thing we did upon reading the news. What, exactly, does one have to do to achieve a world record for most consoles played? Did Fallon or Sullivan hook all of their appendages up to strings and simultaneously work a bunch of gaming controllers at once or something?

After reading up on the actual rules that define the title of ?Most Video Game Consoles Played,? and watching the official videos of both Fallon?s and Sullivan?s world-shattering feats, we can?t help but feel a little let down by the quote-unquote accomplishments.

To break the record, says RecordSetter, a gamer ?must make forward progress in each game? during the attempt. It?s forbidden to play any console more than one time, gamers must use consoles, and gamers must provide video evidence of the feat. That?s it.

In other words, a person just has to play all of five seconds of a game on a particular console before jumping onto the next. We suppose that it?s a challenge to play all the consoles before your character dies, if a fighting game is used during the attempt (as is the case in Sullivan?s record-breaking romp). But even then, it?s unclear as to whether losing a round or getting killed in a game as a result of letting it sit there while one plays other consoles is even going to result in a disqualification.

Even if that?s true, well, one doesn?t?have?to use a game where one faces even the slightest potential of death to break the ?world record.? It?s probably harder for a gamer to amass more than 13 different consoles in the same room than it is to physically break the record.

This ?record? would sound a lot more interesting if the criteria forced a gamer to play all the different consoles at once ? or, for that matter, if it was reshaped to simply be a record of ?most games played simultaneously.? Watching gamers control a ton of accounts in a massively multiplayer online game (otherwise called ?multiboxing?) seems as if it would involve a little more skill than what either Fallon or Sullivan have been credited for.

U.S. consumers fizzle out even as incomes rise (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. consumer spending was flat in December as households put the largest rise in income in nine months into their savings, potentially signaling slower consumption early in 2012.

It was the weakest reading on spending since June, the Commerce Department said on Monday, and it followed two tepid gains in October and November.

Still, economists were cautiously optimistic that rising wages as labor markets improve will keep demand supported.

"I do believe there is some underlying trend that gives us some reason to feel a little bit better about what lies ahead regarding spending, and the main reason is the labor market," said Anthony Karydakis, chief economist at Commerzbank in New York.

U.S. economic growth quickened in the fourth quarter and hiring picked up, but activity is expected to soften early this year. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said last week that the central bank was considering a further easing of monetary policy to support growth.

Economists had expected consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity to nudge up 0.1 percent, the same as in October and November.

Spending adjusted for inflation dipped 0.1 percent last month after edging up 0.1 percent in November.

U.S. financial markets ignored the report, with investors focused on the spat between Greece and Germany over budget measures for Athens. Stocks on Wall Street fell, while Treasury debt prices rallied. The dollar rose against the euro.

INCOME RELIEF

The government said on Friday that consumer spending grew at a 2 percent annual pace in the fourth quarter, a pick-up from the third quarter's 1.8 percent rate, which helped lift gross domestic product by 2.8 percent.

While an expected recession in the euro zone is expected to start weighing more heavily on U.S. activity this quarter, the economy has some underlying momentum and is not expected to contract.

Data from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas showed a strong rebound in factory activity in the Texas this month, with new orders the highest in six months. Employers hired more new workers and extended hours for their existing workforce.

That is good news for wages, whose sluggish growth prompted households to tap savings and credit cards to fund purchases last year. Savings last year were the smallest since 2007.

An increase in wages last month helped lift incomes 0.5 percent, the largest gain since a matching increase in March.

"If the December wage and salary gains can be sustained, households will have the ability to spend more," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors in Holland, Pennsylvania.

The gains in income reflect a pick up in hiring. Nonfarm payrolls rose 200,000 in December. A report on Friday is expected to show a slight pull back in January, with employers adding 150,000 jobs, according to a Reuters survey.

Small businesses added 50,000 jobs this month after a 60,000 gain in December, according to payrolls processing firm Intuit.

WATCH THE SAVING RATE

Taking inflation into account, after-tax income rose 0.3 percent last month after being flat in November. With disposable income outstripping spending, the saving rate rose to a four-month high at 4 percent.

"We should be watching closely the behavior of the saving rate in the coming months for signs that consumers may be adopting a more defensive posture," said Commerzbank's Karydakis.

The spending report showed inflation pressures generally contained, with a price index for personal spending nudging up 0.1 percent after being flat the prior month.

In the 12 months through December, the PCE price index was up 2.4 percent - the smallest gain since April 2011.

A core inflation measure, which strips out food and energy costs, rose 0.2 percent last month after gaining 0.1 percent in November. Over the past 12 months, it was up 1.8 percent - the largest rise since March 2010 and just a touch below the Fed's 2 percent inflation target.

Tony Hawk Interviews Odd Future Crew At Big Day Out Festival (VIDEO)

Tony Hawk should probably never be in the interviewer seat, but here he is, tempting fate, with probably one of the most unruly groups out there. At the Big Day Out music festival in Australia, the salt-and-peppery-haired skater stayed standing (technically not in the interviewer seat, but equally if not more awkward) to ask questions of a half-seated Tyler the Creator and the rest of his Odd Future crew on a stairwell. The hip hop collective is into skating, so there's your tenuous link -- aside from that, we're just as lost as you are as to why this is happening. The Odd Future boys put up a shop for the week of the festival to sell merchandise, and Hawk begins his line of questioning where they can find common ground -- t-shirts. The camera zooms in on a t-shirt of two gay cats, and Hawk vaguely asks where they get their inspiration from.

"Really I get inspiration from meth, and I like cats a lot, and I'm not playin'," Tyler said.

We're glad this interview happened.

Obama attends exclusive dinner for capital VIPs (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama is attending the Alfalfa Club dinner, an annual black-tie event of the capital's political and business leaders. It is the second club dinner the president is addressing in four years.

Obama is at the dinner at a hotel near the White House with his wife, Michelle.

The club's only mission is to put on the steak and lobster dinner and give political leaders a chance to share jokes and make humorous speeches. As in past years, the dinner was closed to the media.

Among those attending were numerous current and former senators, including John Kerry of Massachusetts and Pat Leahy of Vermont.

Obama last spoke at the dinner in 2009. He did not attend in 2010 or last year.

Djokovic tops Nadal in marathon Australian final (AP)

MELBOURNE, Australia ? Novak Djokovic wore down Rafael Nadal in the longest Grand Slam singles final in the history of professional tennis Sunday, winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 after 5 hours, 53 minutes to claim his third Australian Open title.

Djokovic sealed victory at 1:37 a.m. local time and became the fifth man since the Open Era began in 1968 to win three straight Grand Slam finals.

The 24-year-old Djokovic tore off his shirt in celebration after one of the most dramatic finals in the history of the game. He went to his support camp and repeatedly thumped the side of the arena in delight and relief.

Djokovic's win maintained his mastery of Nadal, who has lost seven straight finals against the Serb since March.

Nadal became the first man in the Open Era to drop three straight major finals after losing to Djokovic at both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year.

After coming from 5-3 down to win the fourth-set tiebreaker, Nadal was up a break at 4-2 in the fifth set while Djokovic appeared to be tiring.

But the top-ranked Djokovic, who needed almost five hours to win his semifinal against Andy Murray, somehow responded. He broke for a 6-5 lead and saved a break point before finally claiming the win.

The previous longest major singles final was Mats Wilander's win over Ivan Lendl at the U.S. Open in 1988, which lasted 4 hours, 54 minutes.

The longest Australian Open final also involved Wilander in 1988, when the Swede beat Pat Cash in 4:27.

NFC Championship - New York Giants v San Francisco 49ersGetty Images

In a 60 Minutes profile to be aired on Sunday night on CBS, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell ties the recent explosion in TV viewership of pro football to the ongoing economic challenges in America.

?People want to feel part of a group, feel like they?re connected, and right now during these difficult times, they can turn on free television and watch the greatest entertainment that?s out there,? Goodell said.? ?They can forget their worries for just a few hours.?

The problem, of course, is that if too many people choose free television over paid attendance, the games won?t look as compelling because they?ll be played before stadiums with large patches of empty seats.

?Our biggest challenge going forward is how do we get people to come to our stadiums because the experience is so great at home,? Goodell says.? ?When you turn on [a football game], you want to see a full stadium.?

For the NFL, it?s a conundrum that could become a crisis.? People love watching the game on TV in part because the background of a full stadium makes it feel like a big event.? But with ticket prices and parking costs and weather and $8 beer and fans who have no problem drinking too many $8 beers and the inability to efficiently multitask and/or to use a clean, non-crowded bathroom, folks who already are feeling a financial pinch would rather gather with family and friends and watch the game at home.

Given the explosion in broadcast revenue, the NFL has two choices:? (1) make the in-stadium experience better; or (2) in those cities where sellouts are a struggle, dramatically drop the prices of the tickets.

With fans serving essentially as extras in a big-budget TV extravaganza, the idea of soaking them for every last dollar in order to enhance the atmosphere for the home audience seems fundamentally unfair.? If the league can?t make it better to attend the games in person, the league needs to make it cheaper.

The third option, of course, would be to use digital technology to make the seats look like they contain paying customers, even if they don?t.? If it was once good enough for CBS to enhance golf telecasts with faux chirping, why not hire Industrial Light & Magic to cover up the red seats at Raymond James fans not with tarps but Tampa fans?

Let?s hope it doesn?t come to that.? Regardless, all options will be on the table if the ongoing growth of in-home viewing of NFL football eventually makes in-home viewing less interesting because of the lack of in-person fans with painted faces, fat guys wearing only a barrel, middle fingers in the Astrodome, and other, um, creative displays of enthusiasm.

France to cut Afghan combat role, leave 2013 (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? French troops will start handing over security to the Afghan army in March and focus on training until pulling out of Afghanistan completely at the end of 2013, President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Friday.

Sarkozy suspended training and support operations on the ground last week and sent his defense minister and armed forces chief to Kabul after four of their soldiers were killed by a rogue Afghan soldier.

While the French decision was not an outright retreat, the move effectively brings an end to Paris' frontline military operations, a decision that could prove a boost to Sarkozy ahead of a presidential election.

Paris has 3,600 troops in Afghanistan as part of the 130,000-strong NATO-led force. French troops mainly patrol Kapisa, a mountainous province near Kabul.

Speaking after talks with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai in Paris, Sarkozy said France would only have a training-and-support role once Kapisa is handed over.

"President Karzai has assured us that Kapisa province where the French contingent is based will pass under Afghan responsibility from March," Sarkozy said.

One thousand French troops were due to leave by the end of 2012 and the rest by 2014.

"From that point on France will engage in training and support activities," Karzai said.

"It is right that Afghanistan has to provide for its own security and protection of its own people and provision of law and order. Afghanistan is now ready to take more of this responsibility."

In Washington, the State Department gave a measured response to Sarkozy's decision, which it said had been thoroughly discussed both with NATO and with the Afghan government.

"What we are gratified by is that this was not precipitous, that this was worked through carefully with NATO, with the Afghans and in consultation with all of us," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters.

"This was a national decision of France. It was done in a managed way. We will all work with it," Nuland said, referring any questions on the operational impact of the French pullout.

Sarkozy said he would speak with U.S. President Barack Obama on Saturday and Paris was preparing a plan to present to NATO at a defense ministers meeting on February 2-3 proposing the handover of all foreign combat operations in Afghanistan next year.

"It's important that you understand that this agreement was done with President Karzai and with our allies in an organized and reasonable manner," Sarkozy said. "Our soldiers have done a tremendous job in Kapisa. We are not an occupying force."

ELECTION BOOST

Sarkozy said French troops would resume training operations tomorrow after receiving security guarantees from Karzai and the two leaders would also ask NATO to look deeper into the problem of Taliban infiltrators in the Afghan army and police.

Sarkozy's Socialist rival Francois Hollande, who is comfortably ahead in the polls, has pledged to pull out of Afghanistan by the end of this year if he wins the election held in two rounds in April and May.

In a CSA survey published on Thursday, 84 percent of people said they were in favor of troops leaving by the end of 2012.

Foreign Minister Alain Juppe has ruled out a "hasty" retreat and most analysts believe it will technically be difficult for Paris to drop out of the NATO-led coalition so quickly.

"Announcing a French withdrawal could set off panic among other European countries in Afghanistan," said military analyst Jean-Dominique Merchet.

The killings in the Taghab valley of Afghanistan's eastern Kapisa province were the latest in a series of incidents in which Afghan troops have turned on Western allies.

More than 2,500 foreign soldiers have died in Afghanistan since 2001. The latest killings take the French toll to 82.

NATO has been rapidly expanding the Afghan security forces so that they will be able to take over all responsibility for security when Western combat forces leave in 2014.

Kabul and Paris also signed a cooperation treaty for post- 2014. The agreement will see several hundred French military advisers stay to continue training Afghan soldiers and police. It will also set out several scientific, cultural, technical and infrastructure accords for various sectors ranging over agriculture, health and transport.

Ask Engadget: Best HD LED Pico Projector for a small room?

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Ellio, who fancies switching up his home entertainment kit with a HD LED projector. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
"I'm looking to buy a small HD LED projector to use at home for movies and games etc. I'd prefer it to be small to avoid having another large black box cluttering up the place and LED because of the decent lifetime compared to traditional projectors. I'd be happy with a 720p resolution device, but a lot of pico projectors are under 30 lumens, is this level sufficient for a decent size-display in a dim room? Thanks a bunch!"
So, what's it gonna be dear friends? If you don't know the drill: it's a jump to your left, a step to your right, put your hands on your hips and leave a comment below.

It's the last time that the students of Wellsville High are going to be in the same place at one time. The last time that they'll all be together, because within a few months, everything is going to change. People are moving away, going to colleges in different states, going on an around the world cruise, and getting a job that'll take up all of their time. This is the last chance they have, to right any wrongs, to sort out their problems with others, and get rid of all tension before it all ends.

For this six, it's their last chance.

*Aaron is the one hosting the party after graduation, the richest boy in the town, and the most popular boy at High School. He's the quater-back of the football team, and everything seemed perfect. He was the guy that everyone wanted to be, and was dating *Bella, the head cheerleader for three years. However, he recently cheated on her, sleeping with her best friend *Claire., the co-captain of the cheerleaders, behind her back for a few months. This, obviously devestated her, and caused her to run into the arms of *Daniel, the sweet, guitar playing student. She on the other hand, only slept with him because of *Edward. Whilst she has always had a problem with her, for being the head cheerleader, she has also always hated him. He bullied her when she was growing up, poking fun at her for being a "geek" when growing up. Finally, *Georgia is his little sister, the one that he hasn't spoken to since she slept with him, when she knew he was only using her for the fun. But then she got pregnant, and aborted it. He ran away, scared about what he would do about it. He isn't so innocent either, and has always had a crush on her. By sleeping with her, he thought that a new reputation would get him noticed by her, but it misfired.

"Didn't get any of that? Well;;"

*Aaron: - Reserved - Imagine That!
- The Cheater.
- Older brother to her, but they don't speak.
- Cheated on her with her best friend, her.
- Lost contact with him after he knocked up her.
- Still loves her, sincerely regrets what happened and wants her back. Hoping to get her jealous by inviting her to the party as his date.

*Bella: - Reserved - DarknessToDeath23
- The innocent.
- Ex-girlfriend of him
- Ran into the arms of him when he cheated on her.
- Now has a thing for him, despite his tries to get her back.
- Didn't know that she hated her until the affair happened. Now turned sour, she's a bitch to anyone that crosses her path and is on anti-depressants.

*Claire:
- The Deceiver.
- Has always had a hatred of her for always being the best.
- Seduced him to get back at her, for being more popular, and him for bullying her as a child.
- Has now grown feelings for him, and is trying to keep him from getting back with her.
- He is her best friend, and he put the idea of cheating in her head.

*Daniel:
- The Liar.
- Plotted with her to cause the break up of him and her.
- Has always had feelings for her, and thought the affair could gain her attention.
- Doesn't want him to know about his crush on her, as they used to be quite good friends.
- Also has a bit of a problem with drugs. Nothing too extreme, but still an addiction. Also loves his guitar.

*Edward:
- The Jerk.
- Slept with her, to get back at him. He had the girl that he wanted.
- She got pregnant, ruined the plan, and he ran away to South Carolina, to escape any consequences.
- Bullied her as a child for wearing braces and glasses, calling her a nerd and ruining her childhood happiness.
- Cousin of him, but was outcasted after her pregnancy.

"Georgia: - Reserved - Madmoiselle
- The Child.
- The youngest of the lot, his little sister.
- He got her pregnant, and left her alone, in the care of him. Now hates his guts.
- Isn't trusted by him any more, after her abortion, and now they don't speak to each other.
- Told her about the affair, and started off all of the turmoil.[/font]

L.A. In Bloom: Pets with Fez

weaving1

In a search for some books on traditional weaving techniques, I paid a visit to?Pets with Fez, a charmingly cluttered weaving studio Highland Park. Sadly for Angelenos, the shop is relocating to San Francisco this February and this is the last week to sort through the colorful selection of yarn, books and tchotchkes before they head north. Lots of beauty here! (thanks to Bea for suggesting I check it out!)

And it's future proof too, as there's a door up-top which enables plebes to swap drives should the need arise. We'll keep an ear out for pricing, but until that day arrives, peep them in the gallery below, or in video form after the break.
