Months ago, we reported on speculations that Facebook?s leaked Photos application would ?borrow? from, and directly compete with, Instagram. However, with Instagram?s recent Facebook integration, photos shared to Facebook are automatically uploaded to an ?Instagram Photos? album on the user?s profile, and this only seems to be boosting the photo app. Instagram now populates Facebook with roughly six photos per second. According to VentureBeat, this translates into half a million Instagram photos contributed to Facebook per day.
To place this ?six photo shared per second? stat in context, Instagram?s 2011 year-in-review indicated that the community uploads more than 60 photos per second. The estimated 10% of users that share their photos on Facebook ? combined with those that share across Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr and the like ? are helping Instagram?generate 10 million page views each day and?300 million page views?per month, and all this without a web experience to mirror that of its iPhone app.
It will be interesting to note if Instagram eventually shares any statistics indicating the estimated network effect of Facebook integration on number of new members acquired. Additionally, we?d love to know if there are any patterns or differences in behavior for Facebook sharing. Will Instagram users opt to share a particular type of photo on Facebook, vs. Instagram? One of the beauties of Instagram photos ? at least in this writer?s opinion ? is that most differ in their content from those on Facebook in that they?re observant, perspective shots (of sunsets, food porn, glimpses of irony and the like)?and not just photos of friends smiling back at the camera. Hopefully new Instagram users will challenge themselves by contributing to the service much as the community does today ? and not just apply filters over photos of people smiling back at the camera.
