Epigenetics study discovers cancer risks double when two carcinogens present at 'safe' levels

(Medical Xpress)?Science knows that arsenic and estrogen can cause cancer. At certain very low levels, the chemicals offer little to no threats to human health.

However, new research conducted by Texas Tech University scientists has found that low doses of both chemicals together ? even at levels low enough to be considered "safe" for humans if they were on their own ? can cause cancer in prostate cells.

The combination of the two chemicals was almost twice as likely to create cancer in prostate cells, the research found. The study published online in the peer-reviewed journal The Prostate.

Kamaleshwar Singh, an assistant professor at The Institute of Environmental and Human Health (TIEHH) at Texas Tech said the findings could have an impact on health regulations regarding the "safe" doses of these chemicals and others. Most regulations are set by testing one chemical at a time on cells. Very few if any have looked at multiple chemicals at the same time.

"The majority of cancers are caused by environmental influences," Singh said. "Only about 5 to 10 percent of cancers are due to genetic predisposition. Science has looked at these chemicals, such as arsenic, and tested them in a lab to find the amounts that may cause cancer. But that's just a single chemical in a single test. In the real world, we are getting exposed to many chemicals at once."

Singh said he became interested in studying two chemicals at once after looking at arsenic's carcinogenic properties in a previous paper.

Because cigarette smoke and well water in some areas, including India, Mexico and even Lubbock county, can contain arsenic, Singh and his doctoral student, Justin Treas, wondered how the carcinogenic properties might change when paired with the presence of another carcinogenic chemical.

The two focused on estrogen because of the chemical's abundance. Many plastics, such as food can liners and bisphenol A (BPA), release small amounts of chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body.

"Co-exposure was creating a greater impact," Singh said. "That was one of the important findings of our study. The next thing we wanted to know is how these two chemicals are creating a greater effect."

Unlike stronger chemicals that do major damage to the DNA in a cell, such as benzene, arsenic and estrogen aren't major mutagens Singh said. Instead, their presence tends to stop certain genes from expressing. The process is called DNA hypermethylation.

In the experiment, human prostate cells were treated about once a week for six months with arsenic, estrogen and a combination of the two. Many of the tests involved levels of arsenic, estrogen or both at levels considered safe by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Treas said the two chemicals stopped the MLH1 gene, which is responsible for sending the signal to start the self-destruct sequence when a cell is damaged. Because the self-destruct couldn't activate, the cells became cancerous after exposure.

"With the lower dose not killing the cell, it's causing damages that go under the cell's radar," Treas said. "We found when you have two compounds together, lower doses could be more serious problem."

Why startups are taking social networking offline - The Next Web

On April 30, Kate Jackson had the enterprise high.

At?The Next Women?European Pitch event in central London, Kate was one of several female entrepreneurs pitching her startup to a board of investors. Dressed in jeans and Converse, Kate?s was the evening?s final pitch. But everything about it-the crisp delivery, no-nonsense business plan, and energy that kept her walking on air-let us all know who?d won before the scores came back.

?We signed a partnership deal with Time Out London just before this,? Kate said halfway through. ?So forgive me if I?m still jumping up and down.?

?We? is?TableCrowd-a ?meet and eat? startup launched in 2011 that has developed a swift presence in London?s Tech City. It connects strangers over a tried-and-true pastime-eating. New users log in via their Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or email accounts, then make a profile and browse tables that other users have already established.?Created in house using Ruby on Rails,?Mongo DB, redis and elasticsearch,?TableCrowd?s technology invites relevant diners from its database and automatically updates each booking size based on who joins each table.

Users can invite you to join their tables, and vice versa. Diners can also join ?crowds? ranging from ?Escape the City? (a?group?for lawyers, bankers and such seeking new careers) to ?Hungry Romantics? (described?as an ?alternative?to online dating, speed dating events or hitting the bars and clubs in the quest to meet new people?).

Wine and Dine

Is it a ?find friends? site for adults? A dating site disguised as the former? Kate says TableCrowd?s whatever diners make of it, and that they determine how TableCrowd can best fulfill their social needs on personal or professional levels.

?There?s a big opportunity right now,? Kate insists. ?There is an increased need to form new business, platonic and romantic relationships caused by changing social factors, including:

1. Increase in career changes; a job for life is now a thing of the past (the average worker now has 10 jobs in a lifetime).

2. Increase in romantic relationships; a partner for life is a thing of the past (marriages are down, divorces are up).

3. Increase in population mobility for work or personal choice.?

This, Kate says, is where TableCrowd fills a market gap. It?s a platform that turns online connections into real life relationships. In this globalized era of more divorces, transnational careers, and personal mobility, many adults-especially in urban areas-don?t settle for traditional social scenes anymore.

?Networking has done a full circle,? says Kate. ?Pre-2004 (before MySpace and Facebook), the world was predominantly offline. Today, around 32 million people in the UK now have an online profile. The trend we?re seeing now is online communities moving towards offline activities for their members.?

Secret Sauce

These members are willing to meet new people, but don?t have time to meet potential new dates or friends with no shared interests or connection. The chance to wine and dine over shared passions in groups erases pressure to perform one-on-one, and gives more room to spark a genuine platonic or romantic connection.

947297 10151396592336689 226824195 n 220x260 Why startups are taking social networking offline? When meeting new people, it?s good to have a focus and some ice breakers to put people at ease,? explains Kate. ?Dining out does just that. You have the combination of the food, restaurant and ambiance as the first level of conversation, which allows people to become comfortable with each other before the conversation goes deeper.?

TableCrowd diners-myself included-can vouch that the camaraderie created by food, plus dining with those who share similar interests, fosters new connections. One diner, Mindy, joined her first table on a colleague?s recommendation. New to London, she?s found TableCrowd to be a powerful tool for knowing who to meet and where to dine throughout the UK Capital.

After initially attending her first dinner to review TableCrowd, Phee Young, PR exec at Racepoint Group UK, became a regular diner herself. The food, she says, is good-but conversation?s always better.

?To be honest, the one thing I took away from the event was this: [the ability] to network with people who had the same goal as me ?to network and talk about our passions,? says Young. ?There wasn?t anybody at the event that I did not want to speak to; there were journalists, PRs, founders, bloggers. I?ve taken some valuable contacts away from that event and reconnected with someone who I had worked with for LLB. I also secured an opportunity for one of my clients; without [TableCrowd], that potentially might not have happened.?

Digital Divide?

Even beyond dating sites, TableCrowd?s not the first network to take social offline. Post-911, New Yorker Scott Heiferman had his ideas about social shaken. Previously convinced that knowing his neighbors was unimportant in the online age, he spoke with so many following the Twin Tower collapse that he asked himself a question: ?Could we use the internet to get off the internet ? and grow local communities??

His idea evolved into?Meetup-a global facilitator of social groups based on shared interests that?s now 10 million strong. From new moms to urban-dwelling hikers, users select personal interests, then receive emails from Meetup with local suggestions for groups they might enjoy. They meet like-minded strangers online, then connect in person.

Like Heiferman, Kate eschews the idea that the Internet creates false intimacy, or that those who go online can?t turn passive connections into personal relationships.

?Last week, I was speaking to a top level executive who acknowledged that he hadn?t met a high percentage of his 500+ Linkedin connections and [that] doing so would probably unlock many opportunities,? she explains. ?He was planning to put some money behind the bar and invite them all for a drink!

?With online social networking, you can?t be passive or you simply have no presence! Cut to the chase and use a site like TableCrowd to get offline quickly!?

?I believe that [social networks] provide an expansive set of opportunities that people previously didn?t have,? adds Stephen Jackson, TableCrowd co-founder and brother of Kate. ?They facilitate networking and relationships where geography was previously a boundary, regardless of whether this is internationally or merely when someone may not be able to escape their home or work.

?Opening or maintaining these relationships then leads to strengthening through face-to-face meeting, whether for friendship, dating, business or any combination. TableCrowd makes those next steps easier.?

Global Gastronomy

The Time Out partnership will take TableCrowd to new heights in London, as will their recent website re-launch using responsive design. Their technology?s enabled in 3,000 UK restaurants, and Kate told me exclusively that a Cape Town company?s keen to take the concept there. But she and Stephen aim to perfect their formula locally before taking the idea abroad-although some issues can?t be avoided.

?[At one dinner], one of the diners felt another was holding too much of the conversation and made his thoughts known in no uncertain terms,? Stephen laughs. ?There have been a few others who didn?t really want to go home and failed to turn up for work the next morning, but generally it?s all good fun.

?We?d also love to help bill splitting get slicker-but even with close friends, there are sometimes issues here!?

Pakistani girl accused of blasphemy settled in Canada: reports

A 14-year-old Pakistani girl accused of blasphemy has fled to Canada with her family, according to reports.

Rimsha Masih, a Christian, was charged last year with burning pages of the Qur'an.

The case against her was dismissed in November after it sparked international outrage -- she could have faced execution under Pakistan's blasphemy law despite her young age and reported mental problems.

A cleric was detained in September in her case on suspicion of planting evidence to fan resentment against Christians.

Despite the dropped charges, the girl and her family were reportedly forced into hiding after receiving death threats.

Rimsha has settled in Canada with her family, the BBC reports.

"They feel free," a Christian activist told the broadcaster. He said that Rimsha was learning to speak English and enjoying school.

Rescuers believe American schooner carrying 7 sank

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? Rescue crews searching for a classic American schooner carrying seven people believe the boat sank between New Zealand and Australia, although they haven't given up hope of finding survivors.

A third day of aerial searches Friday turned up no sign of the 85-year-old wooden sailboat or its crew. Named Nina, the boat left New Zealand on May 29 bound for Australia. The last known contact with the crew was on June 4. Rescuers were alerted the boat was missing on June 14, but weren't unduly worried at first because the emergency locator beacon had not been activated.

The six Americans on board include captain David Dyche, 58, his wife, Rosemary, 60, and their son David, 17. Also aboard was their friend Evi Nemeth, 73, a man aged 28, a woman aged 18, and a British man aged 35.

The leader of Friday's search efforts, Neville Blakemore of New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Centre, said it's now logical to assume the 70-foot (21-meter) boat sank in a storm but added that it's possible some crew members survived either in the life raft that was aboard or by making land.

On the day the boat went missing, a storm hit the area with winds gusting up to 110 kilometers (68 miles) per hour and waves of up to 8 meters (26 feet).

Blakemore said the Southern Hemisphere winter months tend to produce the year's worst storms, although he added that he wouldn't normally expect a sturdy and well-maintained craft like the Nina to sink in a storm like the one in early June.

Friday's search focused on the coastline around northern New Zealand, including the small Three Kings Islands. Rescuers were looking for wreckage or the life raft.

Blakemore said plane searches earlier this week covered a wide band of ocean between New Zealand and Australia. He said searchers were considering their options for the weekend.

He said the logical conclusion is that the boat sank rapidly, preventing the crew from activating the locator beacon or using other devices aboard, including a satellite phone and a spot beacon. He said that unlike many locator beacons, the one aboard the Nina is not activated by water pressure and wouldn't start automatically if the boat sank.

Dyche is a qualified captain, and he and his family are experienced sailors. Blakemore said the family had been sailing around the world for several years and was often joined on different legs by friends and sailors they met along the way.

Susan Payne, harbor master of the St. Andrews Marina near Panama City, Florida, said the couple left Panama City in the Nina a couple of years ago and sailed to Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, where they prepared for the trip.

New Zealand meteorologist Bob McDavitt was the last person known to have been in contact with the schooner, when the boat was about 370 nautical miles west of New Zealand.

He said Nemeth called him by satellite phone on June 3 and said, "The weather's turned nasty, how do we get away from it?"

He advised them to head south and brace for the storm.

The next day he got a text message, the last known communication: "ANY UPDATE 4 NINA? ... EVI"

McDavitt said he advised the crew to stay put and ride out the storm another day. He continued sending messages the next few days, but didn't hear back. Friends of the crew got in touch with McDavitt soon after that, and then alerted authorities.

Jarrett, Braxton among 2014 NEA Jazz Masters

NEW YORK (AP) ? Pianist Keith Jarrett says "only music excites me, and awards and ceremonies do not." But the pianist says he feels honored to receive the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award, joining many past recipients who've influenced him.

The NEA announced Thursday that its 2014 Jazz Masters ? the nation's highest jazz honor ? also include avant-garde saxophonist-composer Anthony Braxton, bassist-educator Richard Davis, and educator Jamey Aebersold.

Jarrett was cited by the NEA for his work in both the jazz and classical fields. His latest release, "Somewhere," marks the 30th anniversary of his trio with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette. His recording of J.S. Bach's "Six Sonatas for Violin and Keyboard" with violinist Michelle Makarski is due out in September.

Portuguese unions hold major anti-austerity strike

LISBON, Portugal (AP) ? A national 24-hour strike against austerity measures by Portuguese labor unions on Thursday brought public transport to a virtual standstill and depleted staffing levels at government offices, state-owned companies and public hospitals.

Most services operated by the national train company CP, the Lisbon subway and city bus companies ? all of them state-run ? were cancelled, forcing commuters to use their own vehicles and congesting traffic in the capital Lisbon and Porto, the second-largest city.

Airport management company ANA reported that 22 flights were cancelled by 10 a.m. (1000 GMT), 17 of them at Lisbon airport.

Some health centers around the country stayed shut, Portuguese media reported, while hospitals rescheduled operations and medical appointments. Few private companies reported walkouts, however.

The General Confederation of Portuguese Workers and the General Workers' Union, which together represent about 1 million workers in this country of 10.6 million people, want the center-right government to ease off its spending cuts and take more steps to create jobs and growth. Thursday's walkout was only their fourth joint protest in 25 years.

Public sector pay cuts and hikes in taxes on sales and private and corporate income have contributed to the economy's downward spiral, with the jobless rate growing to 17.8 percent and a third straight year of recession forecast in 2013.

But Portugal is locked into its deficit-reducing austerity program, which creditors demanded in return for a 78 billion euros ($102 billion) bailout two years ago.

Unions are angered by the government's latest plans, which include increasing the working time of state employees to 40 hours a week from 35; increasing their monthly pension deductions while lowering their pension entitlements; and laying off some 50,000 government workers out of the total of about 583,000.

The government made no immediate comment on the strike's turnout, though Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho told Parliament on Wednesday that Portugal "needs fewer strikes and more work and discipline."

The economic slowdown, with the bailout creditors predicting a contraction of 2.3 percent this year after the economy shrank 3.2 percent in 2012, has made it harder for the government to reduce its debt load.

The budget deficit stood at 6.4 percent of annual GDP in 2012 ? higher than the 5 percent target for that year though much lower than the 10.1 percent recorded in 2010.

Given the difficulties in generating growth, the bailout creditors ? Portugal's European partners and the International Monetary Fund ? have shifted the country's deficit target for this year to 5.5 percent from 4.5 percent.

At the same time, they have insisted that the government continue with its cost-cutting drive.

States promise quick action after voting ruling

ATLANTA (AP) ? Republican officials across the South promise swift action in response to a Supreme Court ruling that invalidates a key part of the Voting Rights Act.

Officials in Texas and Mississippi pledged to immediately implement laws requiring voters to show photo identification before getting a ballot.

North Carolina Republicans promised they'd quickly try to adopt a similar law. Florida now appears free to set its early voting hours however it pleases. And Georgia's most populous county likely will use county commission districts that Republican state legislators drew over the objections of local Democrats.

Officials in those states no longer have to submit election law changes for federal approval. Congress could resurrect the "preclearance" requirement with new rules, but for now, the 5-4 decision represents a major change across the South.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Justin Bieber has been sued by a paparazzo who claims the singer kicked and punched him last year at a Southern California shopping center.

A lawsuit filed Wednesday alleges the "Baby" crooner attacked Jose Osmin Hernandez Duran after Bieber and his then-girlfriend went to the movies at The Commons in Calabasas.

Bieber's representatives did not respond to a request for comment.

Duran claims Bieber started to leave the shopping center in his Mercedes, but got out of his car and sprinted toward him.

Duran says Bieber jumped into the air from 6 to 8 feet away to deliver a martial-arts-type kick to the photographer's gut before punching him in the face.

The suit seeks unspecified damages for "severe and extreme emotional distress" and negligence.

Ex-CIA Chief Robert Gates on Snowden, Syria, and the Biggest Threat to America

On Edward Snowden:

"First of all I would call him a felon. Let's be honest here, I'm the former director of Central Intelligence, the former secretary of defense, I'm not exactly an unbiased or completely independent person when it comes to these issues. But I will tell you this. As a result of the scandals that affected the CIA in the early to mid 1970s, the United States government?all three branches, both political parties?has spent 35 years erecting institutions of oversight on intelligence operations. They have continued, they've grown, but they have continued on the same oversight basis, the same principle and law, under presidents as different as Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, George Bush and Barack Obama. Under Congresses led by Republicans and led by Democrats.

"We've spent three and a half decades building institutions to provide for oversight. And those who have participated in those oversight institutions are among those who are defending what's going on now.

"The debate over freedom and security is as old as the republic, and it's a debate that should always continue, but it's a debate that needs to take place within the rules, because if a single individual within the system can decide for himself or herself that [his or her] judgment overrides all of that of all the institutions I've described, then that's a formula for chaos and anarchy. And there are multiple avenues that have been established over that 35 years for people that have grievances.

"So my view is Snowden is not a whistleblower, he is a felon. And I think in a way his motives say a lot about him?the travel itinerary that he apparently has planned. The truth is, a person of conscience would make the revelations and stay here and face the music, and not flee to the protection of the most authoritarian governments of the world. Which is one of the supreme ironies of all of this."

On President Bush and President Obama:

"On issue after issue, including even more aggressively going after Bin Laden and al-Qaida, I found that there was going to be tremendous continuity between the presidents. Including I would say for the first year and a half on the defense budget itself. In fact, when I asked [Obama] about going after Bin Laden and al-Qaida, he looked at me and kind of smiled and said 'I'm no peacenik.' So I found after that meeting, first of all, that I welcomed his candor and his honesty with me, his openness with me, but it seemed to me there would be a lot of continuity, and frankly I think he saw me as the bridge of continuity, in terms of providing assurance to people."

On Syria:

"First of all, I would say I was very much opposed to going into Libya . . . I did not believe our vital interests were at stake. I believe that once you get drawn in, it's like pretending you can stick your hand into the vortex of a tornado and pull it out whole, or not get the rest of yourself sucked into it. And we saw that happen . . . in Libya, where what began as a humanitarian mission to protect the people of Benghazi was broadened steadily day by day with broader and broader target lists.

"The question about the involvement in Syria is, can you put just a few fingers into the tornado? And at what point, when that fails, do the pressures to do more gradually draw you in further and further? My own view is that if you had to do something, that the way the president's doing it is probably?well, it's the way that I would have suggested. To do so indirectly, by working through others in the region: Turkey, Jordan, some of the other states. Providing training. Providing basic military equipment. I would be willing to provide more antiarmor. But I'm not prepared to offer them antiaircraft. The danger of those surface-to-air missiles mainly from Qaddafi's arsenals falling into the hands of the wrong rebel I think is too great."

On the biggest threat to the nation:

"I think the biggest threat to our future sits in Washington, D.C., and not someplace else. The rest of the problems of the world wouldn't worry me if we had a functional government. And if we had a Congress that could begin to address some of the long-term problems that the country has. I mean, the reality is our problems are deep enough in every category that none of them can be resolved during the course of one presidency or one Congress. So you need bipartisan solutions that can be sustained through more than one presidency and more than one Congress. And we don't see any evidence of that in Washington."

On budgeting by sequestration:

"There may be a stupider way to do things, but I can't figure out what it is. The result is a hollow military, and we will pay for it in the same way we've paid for it every time we've done this in the past, and this is, in the next conflict?and there will be a next conflict?with the blood of our soldiers."

Somehow This WWII Mickey Mouse Gas Mask Was Supposed to Be Less Creepy

Somehow This WWII Mickey Mouse Gas Mask Was Supposed to Be Less Creepy

Sometimes parents have to explain things to their kids in more child-friendly terms. During World War II, that meant outfitting a child with a weird Mickey Mouse gas mask.

It was 1942, just about a month after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Fearing imminent chemical attack on American soil, the government issued thousands of gas mask to civilians. But the smallest citizens couldn't fit into the regulation-sized masks. They were too heavy and too big. Plus, aren't those things scary?

Somehow This WWII Mickey Mouse Gas Mask Was Supposed to Be Less Creepy

Well, while the Mickey Mouse mask might have soothed children, it was possibly scarier for mom and dad. Designed to fit kids 18 months to four years old, the mask was supposed to be worn as a sort of game, to take away some of the fear out of a chemical attack. Although, the masks probably weren't supposed to be so freaky. Sure, a child might be safer. But a mother might look at her toddler and think the real enemy was not the Axis powers across the ocean, but the tiny human with the head of a cartoon mouse with a perma-grin sitting in her lap.

Anyway, with Disney's approval, Sun Rubber Company produced 1,000 of these strange masks in 1942. In 1944, it actually won the Army-Navy E for Excellence for producing them. Sun was supposed to make other versions of the pint-sized mask featuring other cartoon characters later on, but for whatever reason never did.

Somehow This WWII Mickey Mouse Gas Mask Was Supposed to Be Less Creepy

There aren't very many surviving Mouseketeer masks?one belongs to the U.S. Army Chemical Museum at Ft. McClellan, Alabama. There's another one at the 45th Infantry Division Museum in Oklahoma City, and there's another prototype at the Disney Archives in Burbank. But otherwise, these eerie pictures are the only evidence of the odd relic of WWII. [GasMaskLexikon, AtlasObscoura]

(AP) ? For President Barack Obama, National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden's globe-trotting evasion of U.S. authorities has dealt a startling setback to efforts to strengthen ties with China and raised the prospect of worsening tensions with Russia.

Relations with both China and Russia have been at the forefront of Obama's foreign policy agenda this month, underscoring the intertwined interests among these uneasy partners. Obama met just last week with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Group of Eight summit in Northern Ireland and held an unusual two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in California earlier this month.

Obama has made no known phone calls to Xi since Snowden surfaced in Hong Kong earlier this month, nor has he talked to Putin since Snowden arrived in Russia.

Former Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif., said it wasn't clear that Obama's "charm offensive" with Xi and Putin would matter much on this issue. The U.S. has "very little leverage," she said, given the broad array of issues on which the Obama administration needs Chinese and Russian cooperation.

"This isn't happening in a vacuum, and obviously China and Russia know that," said Harman, who now runs the Woodrow Wilson International Center.

Both the U.S. and China had hailed the Obama-Xi summit as a fresh start to a complex relationship, with the leaders building personal bonds during an hour-long walk through the grounds of the Sunnylands estate. But any easing of tensions appeared to vanish Monday following China's apparent flouting of U.S. demands that Snowden be returned from semi-autonomous Hong Kong to face espionage charges.

White House spokesman Jay Carney, in unusually harsh language, said China had "unquestionably" damaged its relationship with Washington.

"The Chinese have emphasized the importance of building mutual trust," Carney said. "We think that they have dealt that effort a serious setback. If we cannot count on them to honor their legal extradition obligations, then there is a problem."

A similar problem may be looming with Russia, where Snowden arrived Sunday. He had been expected to leave Moscow for a third country, but the White House said Monday it believed the former government contractor was still in Russia.

While the U.S. does not have an extradition treaty with Russia, the White House publicly prodded the Kremlin to send Snowden back to the U.S., while officials privately negotiated with their Russian counterparts.

"We are expecting the Russians to examine the options available to them to expel Mr. Snowden for his return to the United States," Carney said.

The U.S. has deep economic ties with China and needs the Asian power's help in persuading North Korea to end its nuclear provocations. The Obama administration also needs Russia's cooperation in ending the bloodshed in Syria and reducing nuclear stockpiles held by the former Cold War foes.

Members of Congress so far have focused their anger on China and Russia, not on Obama's inability to get either country to abide by U.S. demands. However, Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., said in an interview with CNN on Monday that he was starting to wonder why the president hasn't been "more forceful in dealing with foreign leaders."

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton echoed the White House's frustration with China. "That kind of action is not only detrimental to the U.S.-China relationship but it sets a bad precedent that could unravel the intricate international agreements about how countries respect the laws ? and particularly the extradition treaties," the possible 2016 presidential contender told an audience in Los Angeles.

Snowden fled to Hong Kong after seizing highly classified documents disclosing U.S. surveillance programs that collect vast amounts of U.S. phone and Internet records. He shared the information with The Guardian and Washington Post newspapers. He also told the South China Morning Post that "the NSA does all kinds of things like hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal all of your SMS data." SMS, or short messaging service, generally means text messaging.

Snowden still has perhaps more than 200 sensitive documents, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said over the weekend.

Hong Kong, a former British colony with a degree of autonomy from mainland China, has an extradition treaty with the U.S. Officials in Hong Kong said a formal U.S. extradition request did not fully comply with its laws, a claim the Justice Department disputes.

The White House made clear it believes the final decision to let Snowden leave for Russia was made by Chinese officials in Beijing.

Russia's ultimate response to U.S. pressure remains unclear. Putin could still agree to return Snowden to the U.S. But he may also let him stay in Russia or head elsewhere, perhaps to Ecuador or Venezuela ? both options certain to earn the ire of the White House.

Fiona Hill, a Russia expert at the Washington-based Brookings Institution, said she expected Putin to take advantage of a "golden opportunity" to publicly defy the White House.

"This is one of those opportunities to score points against the United States that I would be surprised if Russia passed up," Hill said.

Why You Can't Get Stoned from Smoking Hemp

It's an honest mistake, thinking that marijuana and industrial hemp are one and the same. And in some ways they are: both are species of the genus cannabis, they both have the iconic five-fingered pot leafs, and both are widely sought after the world over. But aside from their outward appearance, they two have very little in common, including where it counts the most.
