NBA Pacers' Assignee Orlando Johnson Helps Energize The Mad Ants

With Fort Wayne just a 2-hour drive from Indianapolis, it only makes sense for the Pacers to send their rookies north for some playing time. Orlando Johnson made the most of his minutes and led the Mad Ants to their fourth win of the season.

Indiana Pacer rookie, Orlando Johnson, got a chance to run this weekend after being assigned to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants for the second time this season. In his previous stint with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, the 6-foot-5 guard scored a combined 45 points and pulled down 15 rebounds over two games.

The former UC-Santa Barbara standout continued his D-League success by leading all scorers with 24 points in the recent Mad Ants win against the Texas Legends.

After being named the "Big West Player of the Year", Johnson was selected in the second round (36th overall pick) of the 2012 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings. He was then traded to the Pacers for cash.

So far, the 23-year-old looks like a solid investment. Simply put, Johnson can score from anywhere on the floor. He plays offense with confidence and can hit buckets on the run, off-the-dribble, or in catch and shoot situations.

At times, it seems that the more difficult the shot, the more likely it is to fall for Johnson. He has nice perimeter moves that give him just enough room to get shots off. The guard's high release point allows him to hit with ease, even with a hand in his face.

With that said, the Legends could not find a way to stop Johnson on Friday night. Late in the game, they opted for the double team. However, when Johnson couldn't split the defense and score anyways, he switched gears and dished out six dimes, in addition to pouring in of the points.

His strong performance pulled the defense out to the perimeter and created scoring opportunities for his teammates. Johnson was fast in transition and even mixed it up on the boards against bigger opponents, pulling down five rebounds too.

It must be jarring to go from sitting on the bench to dominating an NBADL contest, but Johnson has handled it well. In three games with the Mad Ants, he's averaged 23 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals in 38 minutes per contest, and surely will only look to build upon that success as he continues in both the NBA and D-League.

Does religion make a person more likely to stay in a bad marriage?

I'm a regular on Christian Forums (although not religious myself), I find that a lot of people posting in their marriage section have big problems within their marriage but refuse to consider divorce as an option because it's not condoned by the Church. Even on the grounds of cheating and abuse, they don't want to leave, most of the time not only because of their faith but because there is kids involved (which doesn't even make sense to me, really, because I know that a peaceful separation would be much easier for their children compared to years of them fighting with each other and staying together).

Frequency Tunes Out the Noise When Tuning In to Videos

One of the most irritating things about enjoying videos, movies and TV shows online is the sheer number of places you must navigate to in order to get the content. Each of the major television networks has its own channel, some of which serve up some full episodes some of the time, while others just serve up teaser clips and ongoing snippets, like the opening monologues for "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson."

Chinese ad firm to leave US stock market in buyout

A Chinese advertising company says it has agreed to be taken private and removed from U.S. stock markets in the biggest transaction of its kind for China.

Focus Media Holding Ltd. said Thursday it will be bought by a group that includes its chairman, private equity firm Carlyle Group and Chinese investors. The transaction values the company at $3.7 billion.

Focus Media announced plans for the change in August and complained U.S. markets were undervaluing its shares. The company was formed in 2003 and operates electronic advertising displays in elevators, grocery stores and other locations.

Several other Chinese companies have withdrawn from U.S. stock exchanges this year following accusations of improper accounting by some and a dispute between Beijing and Washington about who can oversee their China-based auditors.

'Light amidst the darkness': Victoria Soto remembered

/

A nation mourns after the second deadliest school shooting in U.S. history at Sandy Hook Elementary, which left 20 children and six staff members dead.

By Tracy Connor, Sandra Lilley and Tom Winter, NBC News

One of Newtown?s heroic teachers ? remembered as a bright light on the darkest of days ? was laid to rest Wednesday, with family friend Paul Simon performing the folk song ?Sound of Silence.?

Obtained by NBC News

Victoria Soto, 27, first-grade teacher at Sandy Hook elementary. Soto had taught for five years and was known by students as silly and loving.

Mourners who arrived at a church in Stratford, Conn., for Victoria Soto?s funeral were handed ribbons of green, her favorite color.

They spoke of the 27-year-old?s selfless final act: She died trying to protect her first-grade students at Sandy Hook Elementary School from rifle fire during the massacre, according to her family.

?Truthfully, you have been a hero to me for a lot longer than five days,? said her sister, Jillian Soto, according to the Stamford Advocate. "You've been my big sister. The one I always looked up to."

Another sister, Carlee, sobbed as she spoke. "The pain is unbelievable," she said.

Outside, family friend Ryan Ortiz, 27, said he couldn?t help thinking if he would have been as courageous as Soto.

?Mind-boggling what she had to go through,? Ortiz said. ?No matter how many times I sit at home and think of what I would have done, you just can't imagine being in that situation.

?In my opinion, she was that light amidst the darkness that was going on that day in that school,? Ortiz said. ?There's really no other way to remember her than being that light in that room."

Simon was asked by the Soto family to perform at the service; his sister-in-law, a nurse, is close to Soto?s mother, also a nurse. He came and left without comment.

Soto, who was in her fifth year of teaching, was finishing up her daily morning meeting with the students of Classroom 10 when gunman Adam Lanza began his rampage Friday morning.

NBCLatino: Soto remembered as a hero and a giving soul

Relatives say they were told she hurried the kids she called her "angels" into a closet behind her and tried to shield them from the bullets.

Some of the children in her class managed to survive the slaughter. Many did not.

Funerals were held Wednesday for first-graders Charlotte Bacon, Caroline Previdi and Daniel Barden, and a wake was held for 7-year-old Chase Kowalski ? continuing a week of mourning.

A large contingent of firefighters arrived for 7-year-old Daniel?s funeral at St. Rome of Lima church in Newtown, where the strains of bagpipes filled the air.

Two of his relatives are members of the New York City Fire Department, and he dreamed of wearing a uniform when he grew up, according to a Facebook post from a firefighters? foundation.

"It was one of the hardest funerals I was ever at,? FDNY Lt. Eric Torres told NBCNewYork.com.

#26acts: Neb. woman gives a?dollar at a time?

Family friend Laura Stamberg, of New Paltz, N.Y., said that on the day of the shooting, Daniel?s father Mark spent precious moments with him, teaching him a Christmas song on the piano.

"They played foosball and then he taught him the song and then he walked him to the bus and that was their last morning together," Stamberg told the Associated Press.

At a funeral where mourners wore buttons with her picture, 6-year-old redhead Charlotte was recalled as a ball of energy who loved the color pink and wanted to be a veterinarian. Caroline was ?just a doll,? was just a doll," family friend Pam Fehrs said. "She was happy ? dancing and happy everywhere she went."

Later on Wednesday, hundreds attended a wake in Woodbury, Conn., for Sandy Hook Principal Dawn Hochsprung, 47, who also has been hailed as a hero for running toward the sound of gunfire after Lanza blasted his way into the school.

Family: Boy's favorite teacher died cradling him

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman came to pay their respects at Munson Lovetere Funeral Home, where candles in paper bags, arranged to spell HOPE, were laid out on the front lawn.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan also attended. Earlier in the day, he said Hochsprung and five other staffers killed at Sandy Hook ?made the ultimate sacrifice, literally laying down their lives to protect the children they taught and cared for.?

?If it was not for the quick and courageous response of other teachers and staff, even more children and adults might have died,? he said.

Some of the services have been marked not just by tears, but by calls for tougher gun laws. Miguel Padilla, who works with Soto?s father, said he hoped the unity shown in the wake of the tragedy would translate into legislative action.

?With assault rifles, there is no need for those,? he said outside the church. ?If you need to protect yourself, a handgun is good enough. That a 20-year old can get his hands on [an assault rifle] is pathetic.

?Something big has to come out of this,? he added. ?They have to change the law.?

NBC News' Courtney Hazlett contributed to this report.

As funerals are held for four more Sandy Hook Elementary victims, President Obama will announce that Vice President Biden will spearhead a panel to formulate gun policies in the aftermath of the Newtown tragedy. NBC's Craig Melvin reports.

Central Ohio hiker dies on California camping trip

SANTA CRUZ ISLAND, California (AP) --Authorities say a body found on Santa Cruz Island off the Southern California coast is a 23-year-old hiker from central Ohio who most likely fell from one of the island's cliffs.

Ventura and Santa Barbara county search and rescue teams found the body Tuesday on a beach below a steep cliff, and coroner's investigators later identified the man as Christopher Mondiek of Dublin.

A Santa Barbara sheriff's statement says it appears Mondiek died from an accidental fall, but the coroner will determine the official cause of death.

The Ventura County sheriff's office sent a helicopter to the island Monday night after the National Park Service reported that Mondiek was several days overdue from a trip to the island.

The search was called off late Monday due to a storm, but resumed Tuesday.

Army probing day care centers worldwide

(AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Tuesday ordered a worldwide review of hiring practices at all U.S. military day care centers after the Army revealed that it discovered problems with security background checks of workers at a Washington-area center.

Shortly after the Army said it was launching an investigation of hiring practices at its 283 day care centers worldwide, Panetta's press secretary, George Little, issued a statement saying Panetta supports the review.

Little said Panetta has directed each of the military services to conduct similar reviews. The actions stem from the Sept. 26 arrests of two Army employees accused of assaulting children at a Fort Myer, Va., day care center. But the problem there apparently is much deeper; indications are that at least 30 workers at the Fort Myer facility have histories that call into question their suitability to care for children, two officials said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation into worker backgrounds at Fort Myer is not completed.

"Military children are precious members of our Defense Department family," Panetta said. "As a department, protecting our service members and their families is paramount."

After the Fort Myer arrests, the Army replaced the day care center's management team and found what the Army called "derogatory information" in the background of an unspecified number of other employees there.

Army officials did not reveal the derogatory information.

In addition, Fort Myer began a review of the background files of about two dozen other day care workers to determine whether they should be fired, the Army said. That review apparently is ongoing.

"The safety of the children under our care is our most important responsibility," said Col. Fern Sumpter, the Fort Myer commander. "The quality of their care and safety has been and will continue to be our most important priority."

Sumpter said the day care center was closed "out of an abundance of caution" and the children moved to a separate day care center at Fort Myer. A Fort Myer spokeswoman, Mary Ann Hodges, said the center was closed on Dec. 13.

Of the two Fort Myer day care workers who were arrested, one faces five counts of assault and the other faces four counts of assault, according to the Army.

Based on the findings at Fort Myer, Army Secretary John McHugh said Tuesday he ordered an Army-wide review of hiring practices and management at every day care center.

"These initial findings are not only troubling, they are unacceptable, and we will make certain that adequate policies and procedures are in place, and that they are strictly followed and fully enforced," McHugh said.

Investigating ocean currents using uranium-236 from the 1960s

Dec. 17, 2012 ? In the period of atmospheric nuclear testing in the 1950s and 1960s significant amounts of uranium-236 were distributed world-wide. Despite this, uranium-236 has mostly eluded detection and clear attribution to this source. A team of three researchers based in Austria and Australia lead by Stephan Winkler have identified the bomb-pulse of this isotope in corals from the Caribbean Sea. Uranium is readily dissolved in seawater, and therefore is carried by ocean currents. This makes uranium-236 and ideal tool for investigating ocean currents.

Stephan R. Winkler, Peter Steier, and Jessica Carilli publish their recent findings in Earth and Planetary Science Letters (EPSL).

Accelerator mass spectrometry

The atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons in the 1960s and 1950s has released many artificially produced radioisotopes into the environment. Although uranium-236 is one of the most abundant of these isotopes in the fall-out, its detection from this source has been considered impossible for a long time. With the superior sensitivity of the Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator's (VERA) heavy ion mass spectrometry system the bomb-pulse of uranium-236 has now been measured for the first time in corals from the Caribbean Sea.

Yearly banding in corals

Like trees, some coral species display yearly banding structures in their skeleton. In these skeletons uranium isotopic composition of the ocean is also recorded. It is therefore not only possible to measure the present-day uranium-236 concentration but to reconstruct the chronology of nuclear testing in retrospect.

Investigating ocean currents using uranium-236

Owing to its long half-life and still low abundance uranium-236 is irrelevant as a radiation hazard. Uranium is easily dissolved in ocean water and carried by ocean currents. This makes uranium-236 an ideal tool for oceanography. The knowledge of oceanic currents is important for understanding oceanic heat transport and therefore also important for climate research.

The most significant atmospheric tests occurred 50 years ago -- in 1962 -- the last test concluding on the 25th of December of that year. The uranium-236 produced in these test was deposited on the planet's surface almost completely within two years. The general pattern of fall-out is known from other radionuclides. The global fall-out is not distributed evenly between the northern and southern hemispheres: the fall-out on the northern hemisphere is about four times the fall-out on the southern hemisphere. This effect enables the investigation of inter-hemispheric water exchange using this tracer.

The core specifically chosen for this study was sampled from the Turneffe Atoll in the Caribbean Sea. While this is a location in the northern hemisphere, ocean currents carry water from the Southern Atlantic towards it. The effect of this is seen in the record. In the first 10 years after major atmospheric testing, the uranium-236 levels dropped much faster than can be explained by mixing of surface waters (and thus uranium-236) into deeper water layers. The effect is explained by the arrival of southern hemispheric waters.

95% Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

All Critics (63) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (60) | Rotten (3)

Her life, and her work, transcended what we think of as "fashion." Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel celebrates a unique and uniquely determined woman.

Many people remember some of Diana Vreeland's famous pronouncements ("I adore pink! It is the navy blue of India!") but few remember actually hearing her speak. The documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel takes care of that.

For fashionphiles and pop culture vultures, there's much to devour.

Diana Vreeland is both history lesson and sentimental love letter to a fashion titan.

Legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland was the consummate dreamer, a romantic who never looked back and propelled society forward.

A feast for fashion-history buffs and anyone who applauds unstoppable eccentricity.

A lively portrait that's as colorful, dynamic and oh-so-fashionable as one of Vreeland's magazine spreads.

An otherwise fine profile of American fashion magazine doyen Diana Vreeland is let down by pedestrian production.

She wanted you to look and look again, and this film is full of images which make you do just that.

There's something marvellously comic about her, an effect reinforced by her refined yet raucous baritone voice.

This pleasurable documentary is jammed packed with images from magazines, photoshoots and newsreels of a life well lived, but also lots of historical footage of the life Vreeland imagined she had too.

...more of an energetic and affectionate sketch than a revealing portrait of this oversized personality, but one has to wonder if the woman who celebrated glittering surfaces would have wanted it any other way.

This fascinating documentary reveals that Vreeland (who died in 1989, aged 86) was an original: a dynamic woman with energy to spare and an infectious lust for life

What makes this such a joy to watch is not just the timeline of fashion highlights, but Vreeland's unique perspective on life.

The filmmakers have done a fine job corralling so many fantastic tales from Vreeland's life.

"Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel" is an intriguing portrait of a true original; you only wish the movie had half the color and verve of its subject.

A lively movie, and in the case of its appearance-obsessed subject, it feels right that all it does is skim the surface.

[Vreeland's] influence on twentieth-century culture was large, and it's celebrated here with affection, dedication and skill--but very little critical detachment.

Though unwilling to dig too deeply into what seems an imperfect private life, it still serves as a splendid introduction to a unique personality.

Manchester GOP consulting firm adds third partner

MANCHESTER, N.H. ?

A political consulting firm hoping to shape the future of Manchester and state Republican politics added a third partner in an attempt of expanding its influence.

B-fresh consulting, a strategic political and communications outfit, has added Concord lobbying to the mix by hiring Tyler Deaton as its managing director. He began Monday.

Founded by Sarah Crawford Stewart and Chris Stewart in 2008, the Republican firm has about a 50-50 mix of business that is private businesses and non-profit political organizations. The company also re-launched its website this week and featured testimonials from high profile figures.

Sarah held senior positions on two winning New Hampshire presidential primary campaigns and in 2012 was the state director for Tim Pawlenty?s campaign before taking the same role for Jon Huntsman, who came in third.

Chris is a social media expert who was also elected to serve on the Manchester school board in 2011.

Deaton is secretary of the state?s Young Republicans, who worked on Jim Bender?s U.S. Senate campaign, and was a driving force behind efforts on the Republican side to keep the state?s same sex marriage law in place, a campaign he worked with B-fresh Consulting.

?It?s a real privilege to work with Sarah and Chris,? said Deaton. ?What I want to do is continue to build bipartisan support to get work done both in Concord and around the state.?

The trio has also founded a new non-profit with Michael Skelton called Voters for Manchester?s Future aimed at recruiting and supporting younger candidates for city elections in 2013.

Boehner's Plan B Is a Message to Both Obama and the GOP

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article misstated Rep. Steve Womack's home state. He is from Arkansas.

A "Plan B" offered by Speaker John Boehner that would avert year-end tax hikes for all Americans who make less than $1 million was on one level a warning to the White House to bend more in the fiscal-cliff negotiations. But it was also a message to panicky House conservatives aimed at reassuring them that they have an emergency exit from their political quandary, should they choose to use it.

There was choreography to it all--floating such a backup strategy to members in which Boehner says he will continue his negotiations with President Obama, but offering that the House can choose to pass its own plan letting top tax rates increase on annual incomes over $1 million. The House would then send it over to the Senate--and go home for the year.

So choreographed was Boehner?s announcement behind closed doors that some House Republicans were actually provided an early glimpse of this exact strategy late last week, in briefings that involved officials of the Republican National Committee. It also reflects a mentality being pushed by some conservatives--including former Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia--that Republicans need more time to regain their balance and think through strategies in the wake of their election shellacking.

Certainly, one of the aims of offering a Plan B--as Boehner claimed--is to goose the White House into agreeing to what Republicans maintain is a more ?balanced? approach on dealing with the fiscal-cliff combo of expiring lower tax rates enacted under former President George W. Bush and automatic spending cuts.

Not unexpectedly, White House spokesman Jay Carney quickly panned the notion of letting only tax rates on earners of $1 million or more annually expire, declaring in a statement that such a plan ?can?t pass the Senate and therefore will not protect middle-class families, and does little to address our fiscal challenges with zero spending cuts.?

But a second aim of Boehner?s Plan B strategy is clearly directed internally?at grousing House Republicans. He is telling members of his conference who are restive that he will cave more significantly on taxes now that it is as much on their shoulders as his--because they can cut bait on his negotiations or wait them out. He?s not going to take all the heat for any eventual deal they don?t like.

One senior House Republican aide said that some members have been saying they've had it with the private negotiations between Boehner and the White House, including some who believe these talks should be held in an open conference.

What Boehner is now offering, the Republican aide said, is, ?We can do something else, if you want.?

Boehner did emphasize that ongoing talks with the president will carry on. And he said he continued ?to have hope we can reach a broader agreement with the White House,? although dissing the latest offer from the administration on Monday as one that essentially brings $1.3 trillion in new revenues for only $850 billion in net spending reductions. ?That is not balanced in my opinion.?

But Boehner said that the GOP goal, and what could be achieved with Plan B, was to ?protect as many American taxpayers as we can.? Obama on Monday had offered a new position on its tax-rate threshold to $400,000, but it is not certain whether Boehner and Republicans might consider adjusting downward the threshold on any bill they may bring to the floor.

Boehner also said that a patch for the expiring alternative minimum tax and the ?death tax could likely be part of the bill that we would bring to the floor.? As for the so-called mandatory sequester spending cuts set to kick in on Jan. 2, Boehner said this would not deal with those as he continues negotiating for a broader agreement.

Some Republicans said their understanding was that a Plan B tax bill would be brought to the House floor on Thursday, but that does not appear to be set in stone. Boehner, asked if he had support for Plan B in his conference, waved the question away and walked on. House Republicans will meet again at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

And early reaction from members appeared to be mixed. Some indicated displeasure with even allowing just tax rates on incomes over $1 million to go up. Another point of contention in the closed-door meeting was how to ensure spending cuts are included in any kind of deal to avert the cliff, said Rep. Steve Womack, R-Ark., who is also a member of the GOP whip team.

"If I heard one common theme, it was the lack of clarity on spending," he said.

Some conservative House Republicans said that once Republicans publicly concede to supporting a tax increase, he fears Republicans will have lost the moral high ground on the issue. In their view, the ultimate negotiated cut-off number will become irrelevant at that point, because Republicans will have conceded on the philosophical issue to the White House, and they will have become a party that supports tax increases.

?Once you cross that line and say it's OK for some people?s taxes to go up, I think it?s a mistake for the Republican Party, so I think that?s what a lot of members are struggling with,? said Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio.

But Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Ala., said ?there is not a Republican who got elected to this conference or to the next one that ran to vote to raise taxes. So what we are looking at is how do we keep taxes as low as possible for as many people as possible?? Bonner added that Boehner is ?just putting out the different options, bringing the conference into the conversations he?s had with the president, and giving us the reality of the choices that we have.?

Others even expressed optimism that Boehner?s Plan B is a good negotiating strategy versus the White House. ?I think it moves us closer to an arrangement, a deal. I think this is very much between the president and the speaker at this point; there are still a lot of spending cuts and entitlement reforms on the table, and we all want as many of those as we can possibly get,? said Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla.

But as for where things are really headed? ?I don?t think anyone knows,? said Bonner.

English episcopal heavy-hitters defend marriage against Cameron's ...

Archbishop Peter Smith has?criticized Cameron?s plans to legalize same-sex marriage on the BBC and?Bishop Egan has published his letter to the Prime Minister on the issue. Archbishop Smith qualified as a lawyer and Bishop Philip Egan has a doctorate in theology:

Extract from Archbishop Smith?s BBC statement:

Yesterday saw the publication of the Government?s response to the Equal Marriage Consultation. This response has ignored the key concern expressed by many people in this country; that is the proposed change to the meaning of marriage.

We are in danger of forgetting what marriage has always meant: a union of one man and one woman for love and mutual support, open to the procreation of children.

It is more than a way of recognising committed loving relationships. Marriage matters to families, stability, and the common good of society. We risk grave long term social loss by rushing into such ill-considered legislative change.

Religious freedom is not the primary issue in this debate, but it is very important. Any protections, whether or not they are cemented in statute, are open to challenge in the European Court of Human Rights and subject to the will of future Parliaments.

The prime minister is against statutory regulation of the press because he fears that a subsequent Parliament might amend the Act.

If future Parliaments cannot be trusted to respect the freedom of the press, can they truly be trusted to uphold these ?quadruple locks? that supposedly protect religious freedom?

Extract from Bishop Egan?s letter to PM David Cameron:

You have said you are an enthusiastic supporter of marriage and that you do not want ?gay?people to be excluded from a great institution.? Yet I wish respectfully to point out that behind?what you say lurks a basic philosophical misconception about the nature of ?equality.? Equality?can never be an absolute value, only a derivative and relative value. After all, a man cannot be a?mother nor a woman a father, and so men and women can never be absolutely equal, only?relatively equal, since they are biologically different. So too with marriage. Marriage, ever?since the dawn of human history, is a union for life and love between a man and a woman. It is?a complementary relationship between two people of the opposite sex, the man and the woman?not being the same, but different. They are not, in other words, absolutely equal but relatively?equal. This is why gay couples, two men or two women, are not being ?excluded? from?marriage; they simply cannot enter marriage.

More, you are ignoring the huge opposition of Christians, Jews and Muslims alike, as well as?that of a huge number of ordinary people. You are imposing the aspirations of a tiny minority?on the vast majority. Make no mistake, the change you are proposing is of immense?significance. By it, you will be luring the people of England away from their common Christian?values and Christian patrimony, and forcing upon us all a brave new world, artificially?engineered. What you are proposing will smother the traditional Christian ethos of our society?and in time strangle the religious freedom of the Catholic Church in Britain to conduct its?mission. There is no sanction whatsoever in the Bible and the Judaeo-Christian tradition for gay?marriage. I cannot see how anyone who claims to be a Christian can possibly justify what you?are intending to do.?I know you have spoken of the ?quadruple lock? and other legal safeguards. Yet for me many?grave concerns remain about the brave new world you are fashioning in the name of the false?gods of equality and diversity. For example, will I as a Christian have to support your ideology?when preaching? Will you exempt the Church, its resources and premises, from charges of?discrimination if it declines to host same-sex social activities? Will Catholic schools, Catholic?societies, Catholic charities and Catholic institutions be free (and legally protected) to teach the?full truth of Christ and the real meaning of life and love?

Protect the Pope comment: Both Archbishop Smith and Bishop Egan ask David Cameron specific questions that need answering by the Prime Minister and the Coalition government. Cameron?s same-sex marriage plans appear to be as poorly thought out as his ill-fated pastie-tax. That the coalition government would propose to change one of the foundations of our society with the same incompetence that they displayed over a fast food product raises questions about their fitness to govern.

Global Trust in Advertising Survey Shows the Power of Earned Media

While advertisers and big businesses slap down millions and billions to pay for glitzy ads in traditional media such as television and print, ?earned media? such as word-of-mouth and recommendations from peers, are more believable and appear to be more important factors in buying decisions, ??above all other forms of advertising,? according to a recent report from Nielsen surveying over 28,000 Internet respondents in 56 countries.

The Nielsen study found that trust associated with ?word of mouth? and ?peer recommendations? have increased 18 percent since 2007, and online consumer reviews are the second most trusted form of advertising. This is an interesting state to contrast with results from a recent Gartner study noting a proliferation of fake or paid reviews.

Sites such as Yelp or Angie?s List where customers consistently rate and review their favorite beauty salons, automobile repair shops, plumbers, and more will be essential for small businesses who have not been early adopters of such mediums.

Today, when parents go on Amazon.com to buy their kids toys or books, they read reviews from other parents or teachers. Many will not step into a restaurant until they have checked reviews from their friends (or strangers) on Yelp and anyone who is taking a family vacation or honeymoon knows to check the traveler reviews on Tripadvisor to see whether the beautiful hotel on the brochure or website is truly as it seems.

The upshot is that nowadays, many people find it is safer to trust and purchase products that their friends or families have reviewed versus following a paid advertisement.

Paid advertising, such as television or print advertising, is still the most popular form of promotion. However, traditional media is suffering from a credibility gap. According according to Nielsen?s Global Trust in Advertising Survey, ??while nearly half (47%) of consumers around the world say they trust paid television, magazine and newspaper ads, confidence (in these ads) declined by 24 percent, 20 percent and 25 percent respectively since 2009.?

Advertising will need to evolve as consumers change their habits. As hundreds of millions of consumers search and buy online these days, advertisers are finally starting to see the value in what was once the ugly stepchild compared to more traditional forms of promotion ? online advertising and reputation management.

The Nielsen survey reported that paid and non-paid search engine results have seen an increase in trust of 40 percent ? up from 37 percent in 2007. Nielsen also reported that ??thirty-six percent of global online consumers report trust online video ads, and 33 percent believe messages in online banner ads, up from 26 percent in 2007.?

Look for a Qualified Bathroom Remodeling Contractor

With hundreds of companies offering all kinds of home services?from house cleaning and garden maintenance to home construction and remodeling?it is getting harder to do performance and quality check every time you decide to have certain updates for your house in, say, Virginia. By now, you mght already have a supplier or a set of suppliers on standby for your home improvement needs. However, there is a distinction in the quality of work when the company is an all-around contractor compared to a company that specializes in one kind of home improvement service. Take, for example, bathroom remodeling in Virginia

We know that bathroom remodeling is not just tearing a bathroom apart and putting a new one in its place. It takes a lot of creative process and insights from years of professional work. Bathroom remodeling Virginia takes a lot of careful planning, unless you want your remodeled bathroom to look just like your current bathroom. If that is the case, it is not remodeling then, don?t you think? It is bathroom restoration. And if you have more sense (and taste), I believe you would go with bathroom remodeling. Bathroom restoration in your own house does not do anything to improve your creativity.

You might say that you do not care for any creative inspiration, but come on. Who does not want to be creative? Even boring, technical people want to have style and distinction sometimes. Bathroom remodeling can be one of your outlets for creative activity. The great thing is because it is your own bathroom, you can do anything you want to do with it. The process is easy. You just have to hire a contractor and next thing you know, you already have a one-of-a-kind bathroom remodeling job in Virginia. Dope, right? The process is not like magic though. So you have to exert a little bit of effort.

Let?s go back to our first problem?how to make sure your bathroom remodeling contractor has exceptional performance and work quality. I mean, sure, they may be very good in other aspects of home improvement like roofing and the like. However, they might not be as good when it comes to the more creative work like bathroom remodeling, kitchen remodeling, and deck construction. It takes a professional or professionals who are really trained for the job and have years of experience to prove for it. If the home improvement company you are subscribing to does not meet these qualifications. I believe you look for other contractors who can do the job according to your specifications.

Bathroom remodeling Virginia needs constant creative input. That is why it is important that your chosen contractor not only leaves quality results but has creative insights as well. If you believe that your present company already possesses the necessary credentials, then there is no need to worry. However, if the company is in any way lacking, I advise you to look for a contractor who specializes in that kind of home improvement. That way, you are assured that your bathroom remodeling project comes out exactly how you planned it.

So You Want to Work in the Health and Fitness Industry | Project Swole

Sexy Student

The Best Health and Fitness College Majors

Many people are interested in finding a career that allows them to combine their love of health and fitness with a desire to help others. But aside from becoming a doctor, a nurse, or a P.E. coach, many students have little knowledge of suitable fields of study they might pursue. So here are just a few majors that have the potential to meet the needs of a compassionate individual that wants to focus on health and fitness.

  1. Physical therapist

All kinds of people will need physical therapy at some point in their lives. It?s not just professional athletes that take advantage of these specialists. So if you want to help people regain physical functionality after an accident, injury, or illness and get back to their normal lives, then this is a great option for a major.

  2. Nutritionist

Modern man is plagued by food-related issues, from obesity and resultant disorders (heart disease, diabetes, joint issues, etc.) to digestive problems like dairy and gluten intolerance, IBS, and Crohn?s Disease, just for example. And considering the vast array of processed foods available in supermarkets, it?s not surprising that few people even know how to feed themselves in a healthy and nutritious manner anymore. As a nutritionist you can help to guide people towards targeted diet plans that help them to feel better and lead a healthier life.

  3. Naturopath

Many people are fed up with the tenets of western medicine, which often has a tendency to treat symptoms rather than causes and pushes pharmaceuticals and invasive surgeries as a first, rather than last, option. Of course, the benefits of western medicine depend largely on the doctor, the patient, and the illness, but the fact is that more and more people are seeking alternatives, and as a result, the field of naturopathy has been growing.

Of course, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, herbology, and other fields of study for naturopaths have long been practiced in other parts of the world (for several thousand years, actually). So it?s not like this is anything new. But for Americans raised on western medicine, it can be a bit of a leap to this totally opposite method of treatment, which tries to balance the many systems of the body in order to achieve optimum health and wellness.

  4. Kinesiology

This is kind of a catchall degree where interests of human movement are concerned. For instance, you could go into physical therapy or personal training with such a degree. But you might also help to design ergonomic solutions for office workers, participate in creating orthopedics and prosthesis, and even aid in the design of exercise or rehabilitation equipment and technology. You?ll have to decide which avenue interests you, but all start with the study of human movement.

  5. Psychologist

Not all health is physical, and plenty of people need a helping hand when it comes to their mental health, as well. Of course, you will have to undergo extensive schooling in order to earn a degree in psychology. By seeking out the best mental health degrees available, though, you can get the training you need to help people cope with the mental and emotional issues that disrupt their daily lives and keep them from achieving optimum health and happiness.

If you want to work in health and fitness, you have many choices. Maybe you want to be a hands-on personal trainer. That?s what I did for several years, and it was great. But maybe you?re looking to provide people with relief from their stress, in which case psychology or physical therapy, or even massage therapy might be your best choice. If you only want to focus on nutrition, then sports nutrition, homeopathy, or naturopathy are probably what you should choose.

No matter what you choose, there are programs you can use to get licensed and certified, but most colleges also offer 2 and 4 year degrees for most of those majors. Make the choice based on what you really want to do, not what you think you should do. But always remember that if you don?t make the right choice the first time, you can always go back and try something new. Life is, after all, pretty good.
