@YourAnonNews recently sent out a tweet advertising the effort, which seems to be an attempt to create an anonymous, open-source communications platform that will allow for an Internet space somehow immune to government shutdown and corporate censorship. Here?s the tweet:

As you no doubt noticed, the tweet includes a rather interesting typo, and this is true of the mission statement on the Anon+/Anonplus home page, which includes a few others. Here?s a chunk of the mission statement as it first appeared:

?Twart? should of course be ?thwart.? But I like the sound of ?twart??it conjures an image of the hacker as wart on the nose of The Man. ?Censorhip,? too, is great, with its suggestion that state-sponsored suppression of free speech is the in thing. Are these typos intentional? Probably not (after all, ?censorship? is spelled correctly the first time around), but the often clever writing of Anonymous spinoff/subset LulzSec makes me like to think so.

The mission statement (which you can read in its entirety at the end of this post) continues:

There?s also mention in the statement of some sort of green-conscious bartering system being put into place, but it?s hard to suss out if this has to do with sidestepping the power (as in utilities) grid or avoiding the power (as in ?working for The Man?) structure inherent in many people?s 9-to-5 (or 8-to-5 or 9-to-6) existence.

At present, there?s not a whole lot of content on Anon+/Anonplus. Sections include Latest News, Documents, Donations, Forums, Art & Screens (or Arts & Funs), WebChats, Contacts, and an FAQ. The Forum link takes you to another site, which seems to be fairly well fleshed out.

And as the FAQ makes clear, the people behind the effort aren?t necessarily sure how the whole thing will shape up: ?It is merely a network of free thinking, free minded people banding together to create an anonymous communications tool capable of sustaining a social network. What comes from it is left for the community itself to populate and utilize.?

We?ll just have to wait and see.

While it?s true that the often awkward writing on the site (not to mention the somewhat amateurish typography and site design itself), makes one wonder how it could amount to much, it?s also true that Wikipedia was the butt of many people?s jokes back in the day, and that WikiLeaks came out of nowhere to put a serious wrinkle in the fabric of U.S. foreign relations.

And whether one agrees with the self-sanctioned, Robin Hood-like role played by Anonymous and LulzSec, their exploits?though they may seem to accomplish little of substance, and may sometimes harm innocent bystanders?do, perhaps, make one think. If only a little.

And that?s true here. The awkward writing on the Anon+/Anonplus site?intentional or not?brings to mind intriguing images, and perhaps points to a legitimate kernel in the Anonymous/Anon+ project:

With Facebook and Google+ falling over themselves to find a way to accommodate businesses, and with Twitter searching like mad for a viable advertising strategy, a ?new why of thinking about social networks? seems like, at the very least, an interesting exercise.

Will Anonymous? experiment in creating a social network provide some sort of worthwhile alternative to the commercially underwritten variety? Can the project possibly provide a free-speech forum shielded from the threat of censorship or shutdown? Turkish PM wishes to visit Gaza (AFP)

ANKARA (AFP) ? Turkey's prime minister said on Tuesday he was considering visiting the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, a move likely to anger Israel amid diplomatic efforts to overcome already strained bilateral ties.

"If the conditions allow, I'm thinking of visiting Gaza," Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters. "The foreign ministry will be working on it. I wish to make such a visit, depending on the outcome."

He said he would like to cross to the Palestinian enclave following a planned visit to Egypt, the date of which has not yet been determined.

The trip, if it happens, is likely to exacerbate tensions between Turkey and Israel, which considers Hamas a terrorist group.

The two one-time allies are already in the grips of a severe crisis since May last year when Israeli troops killed nine Turkish activists aboard an aid ship that tried to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza.

Israel has slammed previous contacts between Turkey and Hamas, which took control of Gaza in 2007 after routing Fatah loyalists.

But Erdogan's Islamist-rooted government insists that peace cannot be achieved in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict if Hamas is excluded from the process.

Erdogan, whose frequent outbursts against Israel have earned him a hero's status in the Arab street, has rejected the "terrorist" label for Hamas, defending the Islamist group as "resistance fighters who are struggling to defend their land."

A Hamas official in Gaza welcomed Erdogan's intentions.

"We welcome this visit by Mr Erdogan, which will be historic if it goes ahead as it shows Turkish support for the Palestinian cause and political and moral backing to break the political siege imposed on Gaza" by Israel, Ismail Radwan told AFP.

"This visit will encourage Arab and Muslim leaders to break the siege and visit the Gaza Strip," he said.

The Israeli foreign ministry would say only that any potential Erdogan visit was the concern of Egypt, which has a border with Gaza, and Turkey.

Erdogan announced his intention to go to Gaza shortly after a Turkish official voiced hope that Israel would apologise for last year's bloodshed on the Mavi Marmara ferry as part of fence-mending talks between the two countries.

"I would be surprised if there were no apologies since both sides have the political will to resolve this crisis," ambassador Ozdem Sanberk, a member of the UN panel probing the Israeli raid, told AFP on Tuesday.

"We are heading toward a solution probably toward the end of the month," he added.

"Bilateral contacts are ongoing, not on a regular basis... I expect positive developments," said Sanberk, who is involved in the negotiations.

Israel's Haaretz daily reported on Sunday that the defence establishment in the Jewish state wanted to see ties with Turkey repaired, even supporting an apology to Ankara over the 2010 raid.

Ankara demands an apology and compensation for the victims' families as a condition to repair ties.

Israeli lawmakers, including Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, have said publicly that the Jewish state will not apologise for the raid, warning that expressing any such sentiment would be humiliating.

But Haaretz said that defence and justice ministry officials have in recent weeks suggested that Israel could in fact head off potential lawsuits by Turkish human rights organisations by offering an apology.

Israeli officials also acknowledge that upgrading relations with Ankara is a high diplomatic priority and that Israel would benefit from a return to good ties.

The once-flourishing relations began to visibly deteriorate after Erdogan's fierce criticism of Israel's devastating offensive on Gaza at the turn of 2009 that left more than 1,300 Palestinians dead.

Last month, Erdogan renewed a call on Israel "to lift as soon as possible the inhumane and unlawful blockade" of Gaza and allow the entry of goods, notably construction materials to rebuild infrastructure destroyed during the offensive.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) ? Barron Hilton, younger brother of US socialite Paris Hilton, was ordered by a California court to pay almost $4.9 million to a gas station attendant he struck while driving intoxicated, the victim's attorney said.

According to authorities, in February 2008 Barron Hilton struck Fernando Mendoza Tellez, an employee at a Malibu gas station.

Hilton, who was 18 years old at the time, was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

An investigation also showed that Hilton had allegedly driven around Malibu in his Mercedes-Benz and was involved in a collision with at least one other vehicle before he hit Tellez that day.

According to the ruling, Hilton must pay Tellez a sum of some $4.89 million for the pain, suffering, medical expenses and loss of income that the accident caused.

Sriharikota: An Indian rocket carrying the country?s latest communication satellite GSAT-12 blasted off from the space port here, 80 km north of Tamil Nadu?s capital Chennai.

Under a cloudy sky, at 4.48 p.m. the Indian Space Research Organisation?s (ISRO) Rs.90 crore rocket ? Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C17 (PSLV-C17) ? soared towards the heavens with a roar.

It ferried the Rs.80 crore GSAT-12 having 12 extended C-band transponders ? automatic receivers and transmitters for communication and broadcast of signals.

Around 20 minutes into the flight the rocket is expected to place GSAT-12 in the intended sub geosynchronous transfer orbit (sub GTO).

The satellite with a life span of about eight years will augment transponder capacity of the Indian National Satellite (Insat) system which at present comprises of eight satellites ? Insat-2E, Insat-3A, Insat-3C, Insat-3E, Insat-4A, Insat-4B (working at 50 percent capacity) Insat-4CR and GSAT-8 providing 175 transponders in the S, C, extend C and Ku bands.

The satellite is expected to serve the Very Small Aperture Terminal (V-SAT) sector. VSATs are used to transmit data like point of sale transactions or to provide satellite internet access.

It will also be useful for various communication services like tele-education, tele-medicine and for village resource centres.

FRONT LINE NEAR BIR GHANAM, Libya (Reuters) ? Ten Libyan rebels were reported killed and 172 wounded in an attack on the eastern oil port of Brega on Saturday, while insurgents drove back forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi in the west.

In the latest of a series of speeches apparently designed to show he enjoys support in the areas he controls, Gaddafi described the rebels as worthless traitors and rejected suggestions that he was about to leave the country.

"They said Gaddafi will go to Honolulu," he said in a televised speech. "This is funny: To leave the graves of my forefathers and my people? Are you serious?"

His defiance came a day after Western and Arab powers, led by the United States, said the rebel leadership was the legitimate government of Libya. Reports have circulated that Gaddafi is seeking a negotiated way out of the crisis.

Libyan television also reported what it called an "enemy attack" on Tajoura district east of Tripoli early on Sunday, the first such bombing raid by NATO near the capital in several nights, a Reuters witness said.

The television said the strike had hit "civilian and military sites" but did not specify what they were or mention if there had been any casualties.

Brega's oil resources make it a prize for the rebels, who have been trying to dislodge Gaddafi's troops in the face of rocket bombardments, according to Al Jazeera television.

Most opposition fighters are about 20 km (12 miles) outside Brega, kept back by Grad rockets fired by government forces, the network reported. The rebels had however captured four government soldiers.

In the Western Mountains, where insurgents are trying to push toward Tripoli, heavy fighting erupted on Saturday.

Sustained gunfire and volleys of artillery could be heard from the village of Bir Ayad, 15 km (9 miles) south of the front line at the town of Bir Ghanam.

Rebels at Bir Ghanam hold the high ground on the outskirts of the town, their closest position to Tripoli, about 80 km (50 miles) away.

Ahmed, a rebel fighter in Bir Ayad, said a convoy of about 15 vehicles from Gaddafi's forces tried to approach Bir Ghanam, but the rebels fired at it and the convoy retreated after a about an hour of shooting.

"They were in a column at first but when we started firing they split into groups of three or four vehicles and all of them fled," local rebel commander Fathi Alzintani told Reuters.

ASSAULTS REPELLED

Rebels in the Western Mountains have made progress in recent weeks after repelling assaults by Gaddafi's forces. Their next goal is Garyan, a town that controls the highway south from Tripoli.

But the rebels have been hampered by divisions, ill-discipline and supply problems.

In Misrata, the rebels' main stronghold in the west, six rebel fighters have been killed and four injured in the past 24 hours, hospital staff said.

Away from the battlefield, Gaddafi has made a series of audio speeches to coincide with state television broadcasts of rallies attended by thousands of people in Tripoli and elsewhere.

As loyalists gathered on the streets of the town of Zawiyah, near the capital, on Saturday, Gaddafi said the rebels were "apostates" who had "become Christians."

Calling on the rebels to lay down their arms, he said: "Islam is being humiliated by the cross ... They are burning mosques with bombs."

"We have given martyrs, yes ... It's impossible to compromise or make the slightest concession."

Crowds were shown firing to the air at the end of the speech.

Rebel leaders received a boost in their campaign to oust Gaddafi on Friday when they won recognition as the legitimate government of Libya from the United States and other powers.

Western nations said they planned to increase the military pressure on Gaddafi's forces to make him to give up power after 41 years at the head of the North African state.

Recognition of the rebels by the international contact group on Libya is an important diplomatic step that could unlock billions of dollars in frozen Libyan funds.

The decision came as reports circulated Gaddafi had sent out emissaries seeking a negotiated end to the conflict, although he remains defiant in public.

The contact group also agreed on a road map whereby Gaddafi should relinquish power and put forward plans for Libya's transition to democracy under the rebel National Transitional Council.

As the U.S. women's soccer team gets ready for its first World Cup final since 1999, sports fans are rediscovering some of the unique differences of how women play the game versus the men's side. Two recent studies point out one big difference; women are much less dramatic on the field.

While soccer is relatively free-flowing game, there are plenty of stoppages in play. Whether it be goal celebrations, substitutions or injuries, the game can get slowed down if players don't resume quickly. Martin Lames, a sports scientist at Technische Universitaet Muenchen, studied 56 men's and women's games and found that men seem to enjoy their time "on stage" during interruptions.

For example, when being substituted, men take almost 10 seconds longer to get off the field than women. After scoring a goal, women celebrate for an average of 30 seconds while men carry on for almost a full minute. At their dramatic best, when rolling on the ground with an injury (or feigning one), men stay down 30 seconds longer than women.

"In general, the differences can be interpreted as follows: For men the thought of staging themselves is much more pronounced than for women, where the game itself is obviously paramount," Lames says. "Putting on a show, play-acting and protesting are more typical of men. The reason for this could be that men's football generally pulls in more spectators and receives greater media coverage."

Malte Siegle, doctoral candidate and part of the research team, added that these differences may exist because men play-act as a form of gamesmanship. "We can even provide evidence that men use interruptions tactically. As many fans have conjectured, when they are in the lead, players take their time with injuries. Much more so than if the score is even, or when the other side is leading. This behavior cannot be observed in women's football." [How Caffeine Helps Athletes]

Of course, when fans talk about injuries in soccer, we're never quite sure if they're real or embellished. We've all had to watch one too many players rolling on the ground in agony, carried off on a stretcher and then magically sprint back on the field 30 seconds later, even in the women's game (i.e. Brazilian defender Erika in their semifinal match against the U.S.). In fact, it's so common that ESPN has even made a SportsCenter commercial that spoofs it.

So, who fakes more, men or women?

Dr. Daryl Rosenbaum, an assistant professor of Family and Community Medicine at Wake Forest University, wanted to find out. His team watched 47 women's games from two international tournaments and coded injuries as either "definite," meaning the player left the game for at least 5 minutes or was bleeding, or as "questionable," which is everything else. A total of 270 apparent injuries were recorded, or about 5.74 per game. Questionable injuries outnumbered definite injuries by a rate of 4.96 per game to 0.78 per game.

"While it was difficult to know for certain if a player had a true injury or was faking or embellishing, we found that only 13.7 percent of apparent injuries met our definition for a 'definite' injury," Rosenbaum said.

While roughly six fake or "simulated" injuries per game may seem high, the women don't come close to the rate the men achieved when Rosenbaum studied them in 2010. Almost a dozen, 11.26 to be exact, times per game a male player dropped to the field with what was deemed a questionable injury (one in which there was no blood and the player recovered in less than 5 minutes). Apparent injuries that were classified as "definite" were nearly twice as high for women, 13.7 percent, as compared to 7.2 percent for men.

"In the end, I think this study shows that women are less likely than men to fake soccer injuries," Rosenbaum said. "What isn't clear is if injury simulation is used to gain a tactical advantage. Only the players themselves know the answer to that question."

Actually, most of the fans probably know the answer, too.

Apple fixes security flaw in iPhone, iPad software (Reuters)

BOSTON (Reuters) ? Apple Inc has plugged a hole in the software that runs iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch music players that could allow hackers to take remote control of those devices.

The security flaw came to light nine days ago as the website www.jailbreakme.com released code that Apple customers can use to modify the iOS operating system that runs those devices through a process known as "jail breaking."

Some Apple customers choose to jail break their devices so they can download and run applications that are not approved by Apple or use iPhone phones on networks of carriers that are not approved by Apple.

The jailbreaking code exploited a vulnerability in iOS that had not previously been disclosed. Its release gave criminal hackers a blueprint they could use to build malicious software that would exploit the vulnerability.

Now that the security patch has been released, Apple customers will be protected against any such malware as long as they install the software updates on their equipment.

Security flaw in iOS software have the potential to affect millions of devices that are at the core of Apple's business.

Apple has sold 25 million iPads since it launched last year. The company sold over 18 million of its popular iPhones in just the first three months of the year.
