People who still have gambling chips from the Kansas Star Casino before it was bought by Boyd Gaming have until Jan. 19 to turn them in.
The chips were changed Nov. 19 when the sale of Peninsula Gaming?s gambling properties, which included the Kansas Star, to Las-Vegas-based Boyd Gaming was finalized. The casino gave people who still have some of the original chips 60 days to turn them in for cash or new chips.
Changing chips is standard under new ownership as part of rebranding efforts, said Scott Cooper, the Kansas Star?s general manager.
?I have never seen an acquisition or merger or any change in ownership that the incoming owner has not done that. They always change it to the new company,? he said.
Most people cash in their chips before leaving the casino, but some take chips with them for many reasons, including to keep as souvenirs, Cooper said. They have no value outside the casino.
The new chips have a new design, but otherwise are made of the same materials and are the same weight as the old chips, he said.
