Helpful Security Tips for Business Owners: Shoplifting Prevention ...

Did you know that millions of dollars in merchandise is stolen from businesses every year? No matter what you sell or what the size of your business is, you are vulnerable to shoplifting. But you do not have to stand around wringing your hands, hoping against hope that shoplifters will not target you.

You can take action and put measures into place that will significantly reduce the chances that you will lose money to crime. Consider the following tips to increase the security in your business. Keep in mind that while you do not have to use all these tips, the more you can implement the better. Every step you take to increased security will enhance your protection.

One of the most important measures you can take is to hire adequate staff. Be sure that during any given shift, you have plenty of employees working so that all areas of your store can be supervised. Also, make sure that your employees know to greet every customer that comes through the door. If the visitors to your business know that you have noticed them, they will be less likely to try to steal from you.

Bag-checking is another important step to take in improving your business security. Some crooks will try to steal things from you and place them into a bag they have brought into your business from another merchant. Make it a habit to check bags that your customers bring into your store. Also, if a customer brings a large item to the check-out counter, check inside it for hidden items.

Watch out for price tag switching. Some shoplifters may try to switch the tags around on different items in an effort to get something for a cheaper price. Instruct your staff members to be on the lookout for suspicious prices.

Because some shoplifters may try to put additional items into their shopping bags on the way out of your store, it is a good idea to staple all bags closed after checkout. If their bags are closed with staples, it will be a hassle for them to put something else in.
