George Lucas is keeping to his pledge to retire from the film industry. The most recent step in that process happened with the announcement that Kathleen Kennedy will become co-chair of Lucasfilm.In a statement, Lucas says, "I've spent my life building Lucasfilm and as I shift my focus into other directions I wanted to make sure it was in the hands of someone equipped to carry my vision into the future."
Kennedy tells Variety that the filmmaker, who is remains co-chair and CEO of the company, will ultimately step aside completely.
"His plan is to to eventually step down as the chair," Kennedy tells the publication. "I'll spend the next several months working side by side with George and getting to know the company and all the different divisions. We'll discuss the way forward and the future of the company and at some point he will feel confident that he can step aside and let me take the reins."
Kennedy, who co-founded Amblin Entertainment and produced "Jurassic Park" and "E.T." among numerous blockbusters, indicated that Lucasfilm might be more active in producing under her control.
She says, "I'm really, really looking forward to not only reconnecting with the relationships I've had up there but bringing in new relationships I've made over the years. Because what I really love is making movies, and that's something I hope to bring to the Lucasfilm family."
In January 2012, Lucas indicated that he was looking forward to getting away from the entertainment industry. In an interview with the New York Times, he says, "I'm moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff."
