Human Motivation Theories: Defining Effects On Behavior

It is considered that human motivation theories is significant in providing people a different picture of what motivation means and how to stay motivated is necessary to our survival. There are a number of theories on motivation that became popular, and is being applied and use as the primary foundation of some individuals that are highly motivated.

The word motivation means, ?to move? and it is very important to each one of us. We can say that it is a natural factor that brings about action and can give you a new mindset or mentality. Motivation theory describes the methods that lie around the effect in behavioral patterns in preparation for having the necessary motivation in accomplishing what we aim for.

These various human motivation theories rationalize the questions of what, why and how in relevance to motivation. Since these theories became very important in areas of behavioral research, psychologists have differentiated them into two categories. The two categories are content theories and process theories.

The most well known content theory in the area of behavioral science is The Hierarchy of Needs by Abraham Maslow. It is also describes as the five basic human needs and has been classify into physiological, self-esteem, security and safety, self-actualization and love.

The ERG Theory by Clayton Alderfer is more or less similar to Maslow?s Hierarchy of Needs because it is also hierarchical. What is different though is it reduces the number of need levels into three. This theory defines the human needs of existence, significance and growth.

In addition to the human motivation theories given, another one is Herzberg?s Two Factor Theory. This is a content theory that directly emphasize on people in their working environment and their working habits. Herzberg?s studied on the reason why employees feel positive or unenthusiastic at work made him develop a two-steps method on understanding employee satisfaction and job motivation.

Another important theory of needs in the working environment is David McClelland?s Acquired-Needs Theory. It is said that a person?s specific needs are gained and improved by life experiences and these are called achievement, power and affiliation.

One of these theories can be put into practice to any person and field of business. The usual basis of all theory is that people are reliant on their needs and it ought to be satisfied. A definite stableness is then achieved and the person will start to act positively to their environment. These behaviors will result to encouraging and constructive actions.
