Afghan in army uniform kills NATO service member (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? A man wearing an Afghan army uniform shot and killed a NATO service member, the international military coalition said Wednesday, the latest in a rising number of similar attacks.

NATO did not provide any other details about the killing, which took place on Tuesday in southern Afghanistan.

It was the fourth time since Dec. 28 that an Afghan soldier ? or an insurgent posing as one ? has turned his weapon on the international troops working to train the national security forces.

After an Afghan soldier killed four French soldiers on Jan. 20, French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced that France would speed up the exit of its troops from Afghanistan and that it would ask NATO to hand over all combat operations to Afghan forces in 2013 instead of by the end of 2014.

The Pentagon has said that while the number of cases of Afghans killing their international partners is rising, it does not appear to be a widespread problem. Tuesday's attack brought to 34 the number of international troops killed in Afghanistan this year.
