Spain court shelves bribery probe of star judge (AP)

MADRID ? Spain's Supreme Court has thrown out a case against recently barred magistrate Baltasar Garzon in which he was suspected of improperly receiving money while on sabbatical in New York.

The court said Monday it shelved the case because of a three-year statute of limitations on bribery charges.

The case concerned money Garzon received from Spanish companies while lecturing at New York University in 2005 and 2006.

Garzon, who won global fame for aggressively taking on international human rights cases, was barred from the bench for 11 years last Thursday for overstepping his jurisdiction in a domestic corruption probe.

He awaits verdict in a third case for allegedly overstepping jurisdiction by launching a 2008 probe of right-wing atrocities during and after the 1936-1939 Spanish civil war.
