Every winter, there comes a time where you need large amounts of wood for your wood furnace and the fireplace. However, using an axe is an arduous task and can cause back and spinal problems. How splitters work

Log splitters can either be man-powered or driven by hydraulic power. Both machines need a wedge or solid piece of steel that is inserted into the end of an already cut piece of wood. With a man powered log splitter, depending on the type of wood, it may take a few strikes to do the job.

With a fuel-powered splitter the task can be done in a matter of seconds on any type of wood. Mechanical splitters use gasoline to turn a hydraulic pump. The hydraulic pump shifts the oil to create high-pressure oil that shifts a metal cylinder attached to the wedge. A mechanical lever moves the wedge by conducting the fluid from both ends of the long metal cylinder. Some splitters are able to deliver 3000 lbs/sq. inch of force (PSI) to the wedge's tip, which is used by the wedge to split different kinds of woods.

An MTD log splitter can be use by both men and women because generally it is smaller than most other splitters on the market. To break the log apart, you must use an inclined plane or a ramp so you can roll the log up and down on the ramp instead of lifting them. The inclined plane also provides a better entry point for the wedge to enter the wooden face of the log. With a powerful splitter, even a wooden wedge can split the log effectively.

You can place the log in either a vertical or horizontal position. Once you've place it into the ramp, lock it using the locking rod. Block the wheels and then start the engine of the splitter. You can set the engine throttle to a desired speed though it's recommended to set it on the maximum speed. To split the wood, move the handle forward or downward. To stop the wood splitting, loosen your hold on the control handle.

You can also split the log first using a chainsaw and then split it on smaller parts using the log splitter.

Maintaining your mechanical log splitter

The log splitter's engine oil must be changed at the first five hours of use and every 50 hours subsequently. An MTD log splitter uses at least 4 gallons of hydraulic or an automatic transmission fluid. Much like maintaining your car, you need to change the fluid of your splitter every 100 hours. The hydraulic filter is available at lawn equipment stores and must be replaced every 50 hours of use. The beam must be lubricated on both sides before every use.

When you are not using your splitter clean it with an oiled rag and clean the engine. This will prevent the splitter, wedge, and beam from rusting. If you are using oxygenated gas, run the engine until all the fuel runs out.

If you like the exercise, a manual log splitter is great. But if you want to split a lot of wood in the shortest amount of time possible, an MTD log splitter is clearly a better option. Take good care of it and you'll be able to use it for years to come.
