NEA awards grants to two O.C. arts organizations | grant, choral ...

Two Orange County arts organizations have been awarded Access to Artistic Excellence grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the federal government agency announced Tuesday.

Pacific Chorale will receive a $42,500 music grant to support Choral Connections, an expansion of its educational outreach program. Under the direction of artistic director John Alexander, the program will offer at least 100 high school students a two-week choral boot camp, with intensive training by members of the chorale's John Alexander Singers. The grant will also help expand the organization's high school initiatives for student choristers and choral teachers.

John Alexander conducts during the Pacific Chorale's season finale at the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall last year. The Pacific Chorale has just received a $42,500 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

UC Irvine's Beall Center for Art + Technology will receive a $35,000 visual art grant to support the exhibition, "Responsive Eye," with an accompanying catalog and public programs. The exhibit of work by American artist Golan Levin (born 1972) will focus on his use of new technologies to create life-like interactive projections and sculptural installations.

Altogether, the NEA is awarding 1,145 grants totaling more than $88 million to nonprofit organizations nationwide, the agency announced Tuesday.
